“Yes, but the dealership is more important than a petty feud between my father and your family.”

“You have no idea how glad I am to hear you say those words. But you felt differently a few days ago.”

He tugged at her hand. She moved with him through the house and out to the deck and the twilight.

“I know, but working with Will and seeing how much good Springboard is doing, I just can’t hold on to my father’s belief that you or your uncle intended to hurt us or him.”

“Uncle Sampson always told me that the only person with any regrets was your father. He said it was Carl’s inability to face his own guilt and responsibility that drove him so hard and made him so bitter.”

“Until my father says that, I guess we’ll never really know.”

They left the kitchen and stood for a long while, watching the surf surge and retreat. Josh felt as if he watched his life. The chance for something special with Sara surged around him. If he didn’t seize this chance, it would ebb away like a wave on the shore, never to return. If he grabbed too hard, he’d end up empty-handed anyway.

“I’d better get going.” She walked to the living room door.

He reached his arm around her and pushed the door open.

“Sara?”

She turned her head. “What is it, Josh?”

“Don’t go.”
