He stared into her eyes still glazed with passion.
“Say it again.” Busy with the buttons on her blouse. Her hands set him afire. He could swear he heard bells. He’d never believed that loving could make you hear music that wasn’t there.
The bells rang louder. “Josh!” She shook his shoulders.
“Yeah, Sara, that’s good. God, I love it when you play rough.”
She hammered on his chest. Bells shrilled in his ears.Bells?Bells!
Josh had her shirt open and kissed the tops of her breasts. He palmed a nipple through the sheer cloth of her bra. He felt her quiver against his length
Jesus on a motorcycle! It was the phone. Had she said something earlier about a business call?
“Josh, stop. Stop NOW!”
“Huh?” His lips poised above her breast. His entire body told him to hold on and never let go. He lifted his head away from her and looked her in the face. “What do you mean, stop?”
Longing, cold and lonely, rippled through him. She hadn’t meant what she said. She didn’t want him the same way he wanted her.
“I don’t have time to deal with this now.” Sara tore herself from his arms and, dragging her phone from a pocket, sped through her office door.
Josh couldn’t have moved if he wanted to, so he lay where she left him and listened.
“Sara Carson speaking.” She sounded breathless and desperate. But was she desperate to be in or out of his arms? From his spot, Josh watched her disappear from sight as she paced, but he could still hear her clearly.
“Sara, it’s Marty. Are you all right? Sara?”
She must have the speaker on. Josh heard Sara’s breathing begin to slow. “Yes, Marty, I’m fine. I stepped away from my office for a moment and had to run to get to my phone.”
“Are you sure?”
“That I had to run to get the phone? What a silly question. Who would know better than me whether I had to run or not?”
The man on the other end of the line chuckled. “As long as you’re running toward me, Sara.”
Josh felt the muscles in his face go hard and forced himself to sit up despite the erection that subsided much too slowly.
“I want to thank you for returning my call, Marty.”
“Always glad to call a beautiful woman. What can I do for you?” If Josh had felt any guilt about eavesdropping, he felt none now. The slime was trying to hit on Sara.
“I’ve got a few changes to propose to Mega Motors. How soon can you get to Luville to go over the prospectus and view a new site?”
“Wow, lady, you don’t waste time, do you?”
“Carson’s can’t afford to waste time, and neither can Mega, Marty.”
“Can you fax the changes and the site details?”
“No, I still have a few things to pull together.”
“I really want to see you, Sara, but I can’t possibly make it before two weeks.”
“Okay, two weeks it is, 9:00 a.m. in my office.”
“Sara, Sara, I’m not awake at that hour, let alone ready to do business. How about dinner at Delgado’s, say sevenish?”
Sara didn’t speak for a long time. “OK. As long as I meet you there and it’s just dinner.”
