He ran a hand through his hair. “I know exactly what’s happening. You’re the one in denial. Why won’t you give us a chance?” Could she see the pleading in his eyes? He didn’t think he could make it any clearer that there was more to settle between them than a teen and a classic car.

She kept looking at him, but he had the sense she didn’t see him, not really.

“Sara?” Josh insisted.

“Huh?” She shook herself from her daze.

“Will you join me for dinner tonight?”

“Give up, please. I can’t.”

“No.”

“Okay.” She fumbled in her purse for her phone. “I can meet you around 7:00 tonight. Where?”

His lips thinned. “I’ll come pick you up at your office. You’ll be working late again, I presume?”

“The work has to get done, Josh.”

“Yeah, sure, and you can’t delegate any of it.”

“Whether I can or not is none of your business.”

He pushed away from her and stood, slamming his hands into his pockets. “I suppose not, but tell me who will run Carson’s if you work yourself sick?” With that, he turned on his heel and strode out of the courtroom.
