“What happened?” I asked instead.
“Rachel got arrested last night.”
“Shit,” I cursed, and it caused Astrid to stir from her sleep. “I’ll meet you at her house in thirty.”
“What happened?” Astrid asked in a husky voice.
I leaned down to kiss the top of her head.
“We have to go, beautiful. I’m not sure what happened, but Adam just called… He said Rach got arrested.”
Astrid gave a slow blink as she processed what I had just told her. Then she jumped out of bed and started to look for her clothes.
She looked at the dress she wore last night and scrunched her nose. I was already pulling out an extra pair of joggers and handing them to her. They would fit her big, but something about her wearing my clothes was incredibly appealing to me.
“What happened? How did you find out? Shit, do you think she needed me and I wasn’t there? Why was she arrested?”
I took a step toward her and held on to her shoulders to stop her from moving.
“Deep breaths, Astrid,” I told her. “We’ll figure this out. I told Adam we’ll meet up at your house.”
She nodded at my answer and then resumed dressing.
Astrid
I felt like I was going to be sick. What should have been a magical morning ended up being complete hell. Ty and I were sitting in a booth at Zeke’s. I rushed home with Tyler in tow, but in reality, there wasn’t much I could do.
My parents hadn’t been home, which I wasn’t sure if I was disappointed about or relieved, since it meant I didn’t have to explain my actions to them. Hell, after the last time they probably figured I was at Ty’s house.
The neighbors across the street didn’t have much input either, and I cursed my doorbell camera because the angle wasn’t favorable toward Rachel’s house. Since it was Sunday it also meant our hands were tied.
Tyler rubbed my back in soothing circles. “It’s going to be okay.”
Before I could answer him, two figures moved toward us. The first was Adam, and he took the seat across from us before he spoke.
“Hey, Astrid, brother.” This was said by EZ who sat next to Adam.
“Why are you guys here?” I asked.
Not that I minded, but it was odd. The three of us didn’t hang out, and it had been a while since I’d been kidnapped to attend their family dinners.
“Why, are we interrupting your date?” EZ waggled his eyebrows at me, and I immediately shut up.
Adam did not. He let out a dramatic gasp.
“Ezekiel, was that a joke?” He leaned into his brother’s chest. “Is your little grinch heart beginning to grow?”
When I started to giggle, EZ cut me off with a glare.
“Have you guys heard anything?” I asked them.
Adam sighed.
“No, no one knows much. The fact that it is Sunday doesn’t help either.”
“I mean, isn’t she back with her ex? I’m sure he has it handled. The dude was a mayor, I’m sure he has political connections.”
At his words, I felt myself lose some of the tension I had been carrying. Ty was right; Prescott had sat right beside us at the wedding yesterday. That was his best friend who happened to be a detective, so he had connections.
