“I know. Mason deserves so much better.”

“My sister tried to get him to bring her. She knew I’d be coming with Charles, but Mason insisted he already had a date.”

There was a pause while Olivia attempted to make sense of what had just been said.

“No offense, but maybe your sister should finally put down some ground rules. If he’s going to be dating other people, then the least he could do is not flaunt it.”

Dating other people?

She shut her eyes tight and leaned against the bathroom stall. Were they talking about her Mason? Or someone else?

They were supposed to be exclusive.

The women left and the second the door shut behind them, Olivia burst from the stall. She washed up and headed out to find Mason. Her steps were sure and steady until she caught sight of him.

Mason was flirting with another girl near the bar. She knew that smile. It was the same one he shared with her before they’d started dating.

Her eyes narrowed into slits as she marched toward him. The second she arrived, his eyes flicked to hers and he straightened his stance. “Olivia, there you are. This is?—”

“We need to talk.”

The girl scurried away, and Mason frowned after her. “That was rude.”

“Are you seeing other people?”

His eyes shifted to meet hers, his expression a bored, blank one. “What?”

“Are. You. Seeing. Other. People?” she asked with a measured tone. “Because—” She cut herself off from speaking Roman’s name. “I overheard a conversation in the bathroom. They said you were dating their sister.”

Mason’s expression turned glacier. He scowled at her and his voice lowered. “What exactly are you accusing me of?”

A frustrated sound burst from her chest. “It’s a simple question, Mason. I deserve to know if we’re on the same page.”

The way he eyed her made her feel as though he could cut right through her. Then his features softened. “Whatever you heard, I’m sure it’s a big misunderstanding. How do you know if they were talking about me? Did they use my full name?”

“Well, no, but?—”

Mason pulled her close and let out a patronizing laugh. “Don’t you worry your pretty little head about it then. I don’t know anyone here. All my friends are in Copper Creek. They were probably talking about someone else.”

He made a good point, but it wasn’t enough to quell the distrust that had started to grow. Roman had seen him with someone else. The gossip she’d heard seemed to go hand in hand with what she knew.

The rest of the evening, Mason was the perfect boyfriend just like he always was. He doted on her, kept her close, and made sure she had plenty to eat and drink. It was like their littleincident never happened. People complimented them on being a couple, to which Mason practically glowed.

Was this what it would be like to date Mason for the long haul? If Roman had been here, they would have found a way to make it fun. But as it was, all she felt was like she had been turned into Mason’s trophy.

By the time she got home, she was exhausted and irritated all over again.

Cammi sat up when she pushed the door shut with her backside. From where she sat, Cammi wouldn’t have been able to see much beyond Olivia’s body language. But when Olivia moved farther into the apartment, Cammi frowned.

“What happened?”

Olivia dropped down on the couch with a huff. “Nothing. Everything. All of it.”

Cammi’s frown deepened. “Did something happen with Mason?”

“Maybe. I don’t know.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”
