Kai cocked his head to the side. “None at all. You said the mage who visited only pulled a small bit of power. To make a horse. A little magic amusement. This doesn’t mean that he’s incapable of pulling down enormous amounts when he needs to. I doubt Lady Ksatha would send anything but a powerful mage to meet with you.”

“He knelt. Here.” Ryld pointed to the place Dzev had made the little horse. “Because I was afraid of him.”

“Didhe?” Kai said softly. “Interesting indeed. For a court drow to kneel…it’s an acknowledgment of power. Of someone with greater status. He may have said it was because you were frightened, and perhaps in part it was, but I have to wonder.”

Ryld turned his attention to Hank, who had been quietly listening while he looked at Ryld’s work. “Do you think I should learn from this mage?”

“I think if he wants to teach you, he can come to New York.” Hank gave him a smile, maybe because his words had been a little sharp. “But if he knows something, I bet he’d be a better teacher than Yarrow.”

“I don’t know if he knows how to teach me. But you are right. Perhaps it is safer to return to New York.”

Hank crossed the floor to gather Ryld into his arms. “We’ll go back soon, sweetheart. I think we’re closing in on what’s happening at the orphanage.”

“Did you learn what you needed to find?”

“Some of it, I think. We have some things that AURA legal needs to see and some good leads on how the orphanage operates.” Hank tipped Ryld’s face up for a kiss.

“Speaking of which.” Kai reached for his laptop, sat cross-legged on the couch and immediately became absorbed in typing. “I would tell you two to get a room, but this is your room. And you’re…” Kai made a sour face. “Rather cute together.”
