Niece: I got you.

Nostrils flaring, I shoved my phone into my pocket and rushed back into the building. When Sol caught me storming past the check in station to the stairs she was on my ass.

“Brick, what are you doing?”

“I’m going to talk to that bitch Kiara.” I took the stairs two at a time until I reached her floor.

“Her daughter is in that room. So whatever you think you’re about to do, you better think twice,” my auntie warned when I reached her door.

She was right. As bad as I wanted to kick that muhfucka off the hinges, I was going to have some respect for Kiadra if nothing else. I tapped lightly and heard the lock turn before it opened and Kiara poked her head out. Sol remained on the other side of the door, and confusion marred Kiara’s face.

“Brick, look?—”

“Let me holla at you real quick.” I nodded over my shoulder and simpered.

“About what?” She seemed skeptical.

“Step out here, I don’t want to wake baby girl up.”

She was moving too fucking slow, so I snatched her ass out by her throat and pinned her against the wall. Sol stepped up and quietly closed the door behind her.

“Argh! What the fuck!” Kiara swung her arms trying to break away, but my grip was tight on her.

“I saw you on the camera. Who the fuck was that nigga, and what did he do with Six?” I growled, bringing my face close enough to smell the toothpaste on her fucking breath.

“I don’t know?—”

I squeezed her airways a little tighter until she started to choke.

“Brick,” Sol chastised.

“I’m good. She better start talking though, or her daughter will be in the system by tomorrow,” I threatened, watching her eyes buck.

I loosened my grip, and she doubled over to catch her breath.

“Okay, his name is Skully! He’s her mama’s boyfriend!” she confessed.

“The fuck you doing talking to him?” I barked.

“I don’t know. I got curious about her and her life, so I started poking around. I asked a few people in Omaha if they knew Skully, and I guess word got back to him, so he reached out to me and wanted to know what I wanted.”

“So you told him where to find Six?”

“I was supposed to get her to stop by tomorrow, but she ended up showing up here tonight, and I told him. He hadn’t gone far anyway, so he pulled up and they had words,” Kiara rambled.

“I watched him smash her face into a fucking wall, and you was okay with letting him snatch her up like that for what? How much he give you?” I inched closer and got in her face again.

“Twenty-five hundred,” she admitted, eyes shifting to the ground in shame.

“You ain’t shit!” I spat. “I hope you ain’t ever in a position where somebody is supposed to help you and turns on you like that. Get her the fuck out of here, Sol!”

Stomping toward the stairs, I hit my brothers in the group chat and let them know I needed to link ASAP and that it was an emergency. By the time I got to the car, I was dialing Moniece again to let her know the situation and find out everything about Six, her mama, and this bitch ass nigga Skully. If he wanted a problem, he was damn sure about to get one. Obviously, the nigga had no fucking idea who he was fucking with.

Staten had taken the kids to his mother’s house for a few hours but said that they would be back for dinner. The real reason was apparent when I got the knock at the door from a company that was there to install a playset in the backyard. Not just no run of the mill swings either. The setup resembled a school playground with tunnel slides, a merry go round, and monkey bars. When I saw the different ways for a child to hurt themselves, I paused with a tight grip on the knife as a flash of the children outside playing danced through my head. Rogue was so fearless it worried me.

While they were doing the set up and making all kinds of noise, I planned a menu of lasagna rolls with a garden salad and garlic knots on the side. It only took a couple of hours to finish up, so I invited Plum over to keep me company once they were done. Seated at the counter, she picked through a bowl of fruit while I chopped onions and green pepper on the wooden cutting board.
