I threw up a little in my mouth. “Ew. Nope. So my cousin.”
We both snickered, and it turned into a slightly hysterical belly laugh. We’d had our first Dreamwalk adventure, and we’d won.
“That wasn’t too bad,” I told King once we’d calmed.
He shook his head. “No, not nearly as extreme as I expected. Might have to watch some fencing videos online, though.”
“True story.”
We smiled at each other, and he pulled me back to his body, and I pressed in close, still clutching my psychopomp in one hand. “Do you think this little dude will come back to our world with us?”
King hummed. “I don’t know. I’m not sure if Gran did a spell or something. You’ll have to ask her.”
I nodded, laying my head against his chest, letting the steady beat of his heart soothe me from the last however long of madness. My cousin serenaded us in the background—even though he didn’t know it.
“King, how do we get home?”
He snorted. “Your guess is as good as mine. It just happens when it happens normally. Or Gran doses me with her hot chocolate, and I fall into a deeper sleep.”
“Hmm. Well, whenever it happens, can we meet at the manor to check on my cousin?”
He kissed the top of my head. “Of course. You call me or I’ll call you.”
“Will we remember this?” I asked, suddenly worried that this whole night would slip away.
“I always have before.”
“Okay, good. Then kiss me one more time, and I’ll ask the psychopup.”
He chuckled at the name, but pressed his lips to mine obediently, sucking on my tongue gently. We fused together until we ran out of breath.
“I guess it’s time to figure out how to go home. Hey, pup?—”
I woke slowly in my own bed and stretched my arms over my head. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a little psychopomp pup curled up by my side. That sucked, but I had a feeling I’d be seeing him again soon. But Kingston, King would meet me at Willowhope.
As I headed toward the bathroom, I pulled up his number on my phone, and hit send.

“I’m almost there,”I said to King as I pulled into the Willowhope Manor driveway. I had to check on my cousin. It wasn’t quite dawn, and I’d probably wake everyone up, but…he was my family. Gah. I wish my precious psychopomp was with me, but he’d disappeared as soon as we left the Dream-veil.
“We’re right behind you,” he assured me. “Before I left the house, Pops said there shouldn’t be any visible signs of what Ego went through.”
“Unless…is he spiritual, Sky? Or does he like to work on himself? Oh, how about yoga or meditation?” Gran asked.
I’d forgotten she was in the car with King. For someone who usually had a lot to contribute to a conversation, she’d maintained her silence up until now. If he hadn’t told me when he first called that she’d asked to come with him, I’d never have known.
“Um. I’m not sure, Rosie.”
“Gran,” she corrected sweetly, but there was a note of steel in her tone.
I couldn’t help myself. As worried as I was about Ego, I grinned. “Sorry, Gran.”
“Mhm. Better. Now King said Ego was a relative?”
