“Matt, that beast messed with her mind. Look at her! She’s fighting me to get back to him.” Enzo shouted as he yanked me against him and began dragging me toward the cabin. "I can't believe she's still alive. There was almost nothing left of the hunters he attacked. What reason does he have for keeping her?"
The guy who was apparently named Ty turned to me, his ice blue eyes studying my face. "Maybe she got mounted by that disgusting freak and now she’s addicted to his cock."
My muscles trembled, not from fear but from rage. Moving quickly, I spit in his face. My aim had been good and I’d nailed the jerkoff in the eye.
Ty slowly wiped my saliva from his face before reaching out to snatch my hair. His fingers twisted tighter as he turned my head to where Karvik was fighting for his life… and mine.
The dark fur of his chest rose and fell in harsh breaths as he faced off with the relentless attackers. Foamy blood dripped from his powerful snapping jaws.
Was it his blood or the men’s blood?
“Take a good look. This isn’t a fairytale, and that isn’t a gentle beast. That is a disfigured abomination who’s probably riddled with disease.”
“You’re confusing him with your dick!” I snarled, my voice shaking.
There was so much blood. Bullets were flying around us, embedding themselves in the wooden side of the cabin. How many of these bullets were hitting Karvik? How was he still standing?
Enzo finished cuffing my hands behind my back and moved to stand beside Ty.
“That thing killed my cousin, Ronaldo. He was a good man. Maybe you remember him? We found what was left of him near scraps of your dress and drops of your blood. He died trying to protect you.”
I raised my eyes to meet the man’s eyes and my blood froze in my veins.
“I’ve got just the thing to warm you up.”The words echoed over and over in my memory.
The same cruel eyes, the same twist of derision to his lips, the same crooked nose.
“Your cousin was the monster! He was the ringleader in attacking me. They weren’t trying to save me. Karvik rescued me from monsters that night.” Fury pounded like a warrior’s drum through me.
“How cute. Your pet has a name?” Enzo taunted.
I ground my teeth together, still trying to remain in control so I could reason with the men. “He killed them defending me. There have been hikers in these woods, and he stays away from them. He isn’t a danger to you unless you are attacking me!”
The cool metal of the handcuffs dug into my skin as I fought against the restraints. “I didn’t ask to be saved. Take what is left of your men and leave while you still can.”
To be honest, I wasn’t sure Karvik would let any of them walk away alive, but that didn’t seem like something I should tell them.
“Are you threatening officers of the law?” Ty barked a harsh laugh. “Did you two hear that?”
“Why are you doing this? Why can’t you leave us alone?”
Enzo squatted so we were eye level. “We’re doing what we swore to do. Protecting innocents and ridding the world of monsters. We’ll take you back to the city and get you taken care of by a doctor, and I have a feeling the beast’s dead body will fetch us a nice bonus from the government bigwigs. Science and all that. You know how it is.”
My muscles burned as I continued pulling against the cuffs behind my back. “If you take me back, I’ll tell everyone who will listen about your cousin and what he intended to do to me. I’ll file reports against every man who saw a woman in distress that night and decided it was an opportunity to try and get their rocks off instead of helping.”
The smirk fell from Ty and Enzo’s faces, and the blatant mockery in their eyes shifted to a murderous rage.
“Guys? Now is not the time. Shouldn’t we be calling for air transport to get her and our wounded somewhere safe?” Matt had been so quiet, I’d forgotten he was there until he tried to wedge himself between the two officers and me.
Ty’s nostrils flared with barely contained anger. “Maybe we should take her to a hospital more suited for a woman who has deluded herself into thinking she’s safe with a beast. No one will believe you there. You’ll be another poor soul who is lost in their insane imaginings.”
“Ty—” Matt warned, holding out a hand as though he could calm everyone down with logic.
It was past time for logical conversations. That was obvious by the dismembered body parts scattered around the clearing and the bullets continuing to fly wildly around us.
“No one would question it if you were another victim of that rampaging monster. We tried to save you, but our efforts were in vain. Truly tragic.” Enzo twisted his lips into an exaggerated frown and pressed his gun to my temple. “Yeah. It would be cleaner and a lot less paperwork if you never make it out.”
Ty shrugged and rubbed his chin. “I think that’s our only call unless we want to deal with a headache. I don’t have time to babysit her and we can’t have her hurting the reputations of good men.”
