“That’s right. And in a few minutes, you two have an appointment with me.”
I reached under the table and took Rob’s hand in mine. I was nervous about a lot of things with this pregnancy. If the baby would be okay, mostly. I had been injected with who knew what during my time at the facility, and I had no clue as to how it would affect our baby. If they had messed with my DNA or biometrics.
These were the things Markus kept an eye on.
Sam, Kellan, and I had some omega nights where we spent time together, away from the alphas. It was good to talk to someone who understood what I was going through, and weconsidered it a therapy session of our own. No matter how much the alphas tried to grasp what we went through and how pregnancy affected us, there were some things they just could never get.
And that was okay. We were different for a reason.
I scarfed down the last of the pancake while Rob got up and gave me a kiss on the cheek. He would start the dishes and I would help as much as possible, but as I grew, my stomach was becoming a problem. Washing dishes at the sink with a beach ball in between me and the dishes was no simple task. Most of the time, I walked away with a soaked shirt and had to mop up what had dripped onto the floor.
Once the dishwasher was running and Rob took care of the rest of the cleanup, he wrapped his arms around my middle, his hands clasping above my belly. “Let’s go to your ultrasound. Markus has some blood test results as well. Everything is going to be okay. I promise.”
I nodded, leaning back to absorb some of his warmth. “Let’s go.”
We walked the short distance to Markus’ cabin. Inside, he was waiting with some papers in his hands. The bed I’d once recovered in was set up along with the ultrasound machine and that god-awful blue gel that he spread all over my stomach.
“Just tell me.” I sat on the edge of the bed with Rob’s help. “Are they okay?”
Markus smiled. “Yes, Sage. From what I can tell by the bloodwork, you and your babies are just fine. You have some deficiencies I want to address. I’m not sure those are from the experiments or from simply being malnourished for such a long period of time, but I’d like to get you an iron infusion and some other supplements.”
“More horse pills. Yay!” Everyone laughed. Easy for them; they didn’t have to choke down the damned things.
“And some needles, I’m afraid. Alright. Are we ready to see those babies? Did you decide if you want to know the sexes?”
Rob and I shared a look. He didn’t want to know. Wanted to be surprised. I, on the other hand, wanted zero surprises in my life—ever. That wasn’t possible, but I wished for it anyway.
“We would like to know,” Rob said, taking my hand in his.
“Good. Let’s get started.”
Markus applied the blue gel after a warning and, with the wand in hand, started the process of scanning the babies. He did some measurements and said they were coming along nicely, big for their size and for how far along I was. They were tall, like their father, and even if they were born today, were at weight and thriving. Good thing, since I only had a few weeks left.
“Baby A is…” He made a circle on the screen. “A boy.”
Rob leaned down to kiss my forehead. “A male and the other?”
“Baby B is…a girl. You have a son and a daughter.”
My gaze never left the screen. In the span of less than a year, I’d found a home, physically, here with my sleuth, and emotionally with my mate. I had a job and was trained to do another. I contributed to our community. I had friends. And now, we had a family. Rob and I were always a family but now, we were more.
“Thank you, Markus,” Rob whispered.
“I’ll give you two a moment. Rob, you’ll clean up your omega?”
Rob nodded and leaned down to lay his head across my chest. “A boy and a girl. Are you happy, Sage?”
“I can’t believe it,” I murmured, running my hand through his soft, thick hair. “We have a son and a daughter.”
“We do. We need to pick names. We only have a few weeks left.”
“Look at me,” I said.
He moved, lifting his head. “What, my love?” He was crying. The tears streamed down his face but with a smile.
“I love you more than anything. I love our family.”
“I love you, omega. There’s no one in the world I’d want to have a family with. You’re going to be the best dad.”
