Anazure light blazed across the surface like wildfire, closing in on my power, my shield shrinking toward me.
“Thiswon’t work,”Ibreathed, pulling whatIcould to keep the shield from collapsing. “Iwant you in here with me too much to keep you out.”
Hepressed harder andIheard his soft reply, “Theremay be times you want me in there with you, but your shield must hold.Youprotect yourself and you protect her.”
Glancingdown to my belly,Iplaced a hand over it. “Idon’t like this conversation,Revich.”
“Itold you we’d stop as long as you can keep me out.”Anotherflare of blue light lit the room, engulfing his hands in a swirling mass of the power ofBaron.Heleaned forward on his hands, pushing into my shield.Itbegan to bend, sinking inward toward my chest, butIwould not allow it to break.
Angercoursed quickly through my veins.
Iwould protect him.Iwould protect all of us.Therewas no choosing to be had.Icarried the strength of the most powerful place and beings on this isle, andIwould not fail in this task he presented to me.
Ireached from within, just as he had instructed, letting fill the well of power inside that charred tree of my mind before it spilled over and over again, green layers forming continuously from me, pushingRevichback.
Pushingeven harder, he began to slip, my power growing, engulfing not only me but the chair, the small table beside it, soon flowing over half the bed and pushingRevichagainst the wall.
Hetook one last lunge forward, my power giving slightly to his own beforeIsiphoned again from that well, pushing him back up against the black stone.
Ilet the shield fall, breathing heavily and holding onto the chair for balance.
Hewas there, taking me into his arms and kissing the top of my head. “Iswear, every day we discover more about your power.Youhave no limits, my love.”
Ipressed my forehead to his neck.Thecool skin of his bare chest eased the heat from pulling so much power forward.
Helifted my chin, pressing a kiss to my lips, his hands roaming my shoulders, pulling at the straps of my gown.
“Wait,”Ibreathed.
Hestopped, pulling back to hear me.
Iswallowed hard, regaining my breath. “Again,”Ipanted, “Iwant to try again.”

Rev
“Lookslike a lumen.”
Ijumped, almost cutting into my hand with my whittling knife.Adaynthsat in the blue chair across from mine, bent forward and watching asIshaped a piece of pine over a basket.
“That’snot your chair,”Iresponded, adding, “Move.”
Helifted his hands in defeat, his shadowy form standing and shifting to the fireplace whichIhad kept burning bright asKarusslept on our bed, exhausted in more ways than one.
“Doyou…”Istarted, jerking my head to the bed whereKarusandIhad spent a long, lazy hour enjoying the promiseIhad given her for her shield work.
Hecringed. “No.Anyinkling of desire in your head sends me far, far away.Andshe doesn’t let me in regardless.”
Inodded, tilting my head and continuing my work. “Shecan contain a shield to the corners of this room.”
Hefrowned.
“And,”Iadded, looking up at him, “she can keep me out of it.”
“How?”
“Youknow how,”Ilashed. “Youare constantly reminding me how it is that she holds so much power.”
