My hands shake with excitement and nerves as I drive the car into the shipping container. When I exit, Williams approaches me as I head towards the Corolla. He puts the envelopes under his armpit, claps his hands, and then rubs them together.

“What a thrill, eh?! I must say, Layla, I love seeing a beautiful girl like you drive these cars in here. It looks good on you! Wish I could hire you full-time.” He smiles widely, beaming as he hands me the envelopes of cash.

“What drugs did I steal tonight?” I sass and it makes him smile. “You got us for one more job, Williams. Make it a good one,” I say blandly as I walk past him.

“That’s just another reason why I love ya, sweetheart! You know how to do business!” he calls after me. I wave at him without looking back and get into the Corolla, slamming the door shut and throwing the envelope onto Axel’s lap.

“Let’s get the fuck out of here.” He gives me his usual shit-eating grin and we head out.

I hate to admit it, but I’m loving the power position I sit in. Just by knowing Colt, my confidence has skyrocketed. I mean, I just chatted with a mob boss and didn’t even flinch. Old Layla would have been terrified.

Let’s just hope we can get out of here before this bad girl loves the thrill too much, and we end up trapped in The Shores forever.

CHAPTER

FORTY-SIX

LOST TIME

LAYLA

Colt looks adorable with his unruly black hair curling out the sides of his backwards hat smiling ear to ear as he sits on the doctor’s examination table.

“I cannot wait to shower this goddamn leg. First thing I’m doing when we get home. It probably stinks in there,” he says, examining the scuffed cast from side to side.

I scrunch up my nose. “That’s gross.”

“Well, I can’t help it! Then I gotta strengthen this bad boy back up. Here come the leg workouts.” He wiggles his eyebrows at me suggestively.

I shrug, suppressing a grin. “Hey, I’m not complaining.” He smirks and squeezes my hand.

I can’t wait to have the freedom to fuck again. This man brought out the naughty girl within me, and with a banged up leg he wasn’t able to do the things I know he’s capable of.

Needless to say, we are going to have lots of sex.

The doctor from Williams' place walks in all smiles. He has a new leg brace and the saw to cut off the cast. He promptly cuts itoff and we all burst out laughing at the horrible smell that comes from it. Men wearing casts for weeks, yeah, it’s disgusting.

I plug my nose as the doctor quickly wipes him down with baby wipes, saving us all from that misery as we continue to chuckle. Surprisingly, his leg hasn’t lost too much muscle mass, but they were huge and powerful to begin with.

The doctor puts on the boot brace and he tries it out, walking around the room. After he’s done, we head home for Colt’s post-cast shower. The drive is mostly quiet, nothing but the rumble of the engine as we cruise down the road.

“I wanna come with you.” Colt breaks the silence, looking over at me. “On the next job. No Axel, just you and me. I wanna see my fine ass woman in action.” His eyes flash with excitement.

He misses the thrill.

“You can just push Axel out like that? I mean, he needs the money. He’s always complaining he’s broke.”

“That’s not my problem. I wanna do my last job ever with my girl. Before we run off into the Hawaiian sunset.” I glance at him, and he gives me the sexiest smirk, making butterflies erupt in my stomach.

The idea of spending my life with him just hits the spot for me.

“Axel is a big boy. He needs to learn to take care of himself. He’s not going anywhere, so he’ll have more money to be made with Williams. Plus, he’s being a fucking asshole. I am starting to wonder how involved he was in stealing the drugs from the car I crashed. Williams is being very hush-hush about what happened.”

I bite my lip and glance over at him again. “I’ve wondered that too. We need to find out who wants us dead, Colt. All these threats we have been getting, do you think it could be someone close to us…” I trail off and he grabs my hand, giving it a squeeze.

“Later tonight, I’m going to find out. Williams is involved in international crime. People make money off my cars on the black market and place sure bets on my races. It could be fucking anyone that’s pissed off I’m leaving.”

“That doesn’t ease my mind at all. Like, how did it even get out that you’re leaving? We shouldn’t have said anything to anyone. Are we just sitting ducks waiting for some hitman to take us out when we least expect it? Or is Williams somehow protecting us? Or is he out to get us like Constantine said?” I let out a deep, anxious breath.
