Without stopping, I meander my way through the main living space and put down my glass before walking down the hallway towards the office and garage. I studied the floor plans and indoor cameras that were hacked and know they keep the keys in a small den closest to the garage. I easily find the door to the den and look around before I enter, making sure no one sees me as I slip inside, quietly shutting the door and moving into the room.
It doesn’t take me long to locate the chest on the wall, opening it to find multiple keys for all his cars. I sift through them until I find the Lambo Urus keys and grab them, heading to the door. Peeking out, I make sure the coast is clear before I step back into the hall, heading through the mud room and towards the garage.
As my hand holds the doorknob to the garage, the hair on my neck stands up, and I feel eyes on me from behind. My heart slams against my ribcage as I slowly look over my shoulder to see Constantine standing at the end of the hall with his shirt unbuttoned and open wide, displaying his defined chest, watching me with a devious look on his face. Of course he is here.
I’ve gotta move fucking quick.
Without looking back, I exit the side garage door and take off my heels, maneuvering quickly through all the parked cars towards the Urus. Colt is crouched beside the car waiting for me, so I press unlock on the fob. I hear the car door open, and he hops into the passenger seat, turning off the inside lights as I pick up my pace. My heart is racing as I eye the gates, quickly noting they are still open.
As soon as I get into the car, Colt pushes the keyless ignition and I put it into drive. I glance at Colt, who is smiling ear to ear as I start pulling the car out of the driveway.
The whole process took less than ten minutes.
He keeps an eye out behind us as my breath quivers. “That’s good, babe, keep going. There’s no one on us.” We make our way through the expensive neighborhood, praying that no one recognizes the car and the fact the owner is not in it.
“Constantine was there…he-he saw me,” I say nervously, trying to remain focused on the road.
“It’s okay, baby. Just breathe and keep driving normally, there's still no one behind us.”
We drive through the suburban streets and onto the main roads. One phase of getting out of here is done, now we just have to get on the freeway. As we pull up to the freeway entrance, the traffic light turns red, so I ease off the gas and stop, both of us letting out a little breath.
But right before we can officially relax, a siren sounds, and red and blue lights flash behind us. Colt and I look at each other, and his expression tells me everything I need to know.
It’s on.
CHAPTER
FIFTY
CAR CHASE
LAYLA
We’re stopped, eyes intently watching the mirrors, waiting for the officer to approach the car. This car has 640 horsepower, so I will have no trouble getting away from this guy. The risks are in maneuvering it through traffic at high speeds during a police chase and not killing us.
Holy fuck. Adrenaline courses through my veins, the blood rush in my ears nearly deafening as my breaths become rapid. My hands shake on the steering wheel, and my entire body buzzes with fear and anticipation. If I fuck this up, we’re both dead or going to jail, and everything we worked so hard for is done.
“Wait until he’s right in your blind spot, then peel out and get on the freeway. The cops can’t exceed 90 miles per hour in a car pursuit. We’ll have to weave in and out of traffic to get ahead of him fast and get out of his jurisdiction. And because of our speed, the helicopter will most definitely be called on. So we gotta lose them quickly before the copter can even locate us,” Colton says calmly as we watch the cop get out of the car and approach us in the side mirror.
He looks over at me. The cop is at our back bumper.
“You got this, Lay.” He puts his hand on mine on the gear stick as the cop reaches the back passenger window. The second he hits my blind spot, we put it into gear and take the fuck off, throwing dirt and rocks at the officer who’s now running back to his car.
We're off like a flash and merge right onto the highway, weaving in and out of cars until we finally see his lights in the distance behind us. Colt watches out the back of the car, giving me tips as we drive.
“Punch it, baby. We gotta get as far ahead as possible to cross jurisdictions and then get off the highway and navigate out of the city to the country.” I do as I’m told, and the car accelerates to 110 miles per hour…120…125…I feel like a fucking race car driver as the lights get more and more distant behind us. It’s like I’m playing a video game the way I’m navigating through traffic, flying by everyone.
When we can no longer see the cherries behind us, it’s time to get out of the city and hide out. Once we reach a spot with few cars around us, I slow right down and drive the speed limit.
“Get off the highway here and go left,” Colt advises. We’re halfway back to The Shores, but we head North and out of the city. He gives me a series of turns, right, left, right, left, as we drive down these back country roads.
After driving about fifty miles into the countryside, Colt directs me to a small lane overgrown with trees and shrubs that line either side, making for a very secluded spot. You wouldn’t even know there was a lane here if he didn’t point it out. We drive down the bumpy path for about two minutes when the headlights highlight a small building that looks like a hunting cabin. No one will see our car here. It is the perfect hiding spot.
“I texted Williams, told him what happened. This is a safe house. We’re going to wait here until they can stop hearing aboutit on the scanner. Then he will send someone with new plates and vehicle ID stickers. Until then, we’re to lay low.” I put the car in park, take off my seat belt, and let out a deep breath.
I lean my head back on the headrest and start to giggle uncontrollably. A small smirk pulls at the corner of his mouth.
“What?” His smile gets larger as he watches me full-out belly laugh. Clearly, it’s becoming contagious because he starts to laugh too.
