Nevin looked at me, a strange expression on his face.
“What?”
He smiled a little sheepishly. “N-Nothing. They seem…nice?”
“Nosy, you mean,” I said around a sigh. “Sorry. I honestly didn’t know they’d be here, but hey, look on the bright side? Now you’ve met everyone but Xan?”
“It’s okay.” He reached out and took my hand, giving my fingers a timid squeeze. “This is all new to me, but they really did seem nice. Just…also a little intimidating. I’ll get used to them.”
“I hope so.” I lifted our joined hands to my mouth and placed a kiss on Nevin’s knuckles. “You’ll have to get used to them eventually if you intend to be my mate.”
Nevin’s jaw went slack. “You really mean that?”
“What? You doubt me?”
He shrugged. “I… I just assumed, with my heat and everything…” His voice trailed off, sounding almost dejected.
I was quick to respond, catching both his hands in mine and drawing them to my chest. “The heat hormones just fast-forwarded our relationship a little bit, that’s all. I mean it. I want you—all of you. I want you to be a part of my family, Nev. I want to share my life with you. I know things are moving kind of fast, but I really do feel like this is meant to be. You’re mine, and I’m yours. Don’t ever doubt that.”
“Aww, Kace.” Nevin threw his arms around me in a full-body hug. I squeezed him back, right there in the middle of the cafe-bistro, in front of everyone. Taking a page out of Xan’s book and not giving a single fuck who watched us.
When he pulled back, he was teary-eyed but smiling. “Can we eat now?”
I laughed. “Your wish is my command.”

KACE
The bright Maysunlight shone through the kitchen window, dappling the floorboards and warming my toes. I sat at the kitchen table with a bowl of shredded wheat in front of me, heaped high with sugar.
Across from me was Nevin. Dressed in a pair of cute baby blue PJs that once belonged to my little brother, complete with a pom-pom bunny tail and hood with ears, he was busy squishing his cereal down with his spoon, drowning it in the milk.
I couldn’t help but grin at the face he made, the tip of his tongue stuck out in focus. Like making his shredded wheat soggy was the most important task in the world. He didn’t seem to notice me watching him; that, or he didn’t care. As time went on, he seemed to care less when he caught me staring, and I couldn’t help it—I stared at him often. He was just so beautiful and perfect andmine.
I sighed happily. We hadn’t been together very long, but Nevin really did make me the happiest Alpha in the world.
He glanced up, his silvery-blond bangs fringing over his eyes, in need of a trim. He shook his head to toss them out of his line of sight, then fixed me with a curious stare. “What?”
I grinned. “Nothing.”
“You sure about that?” But he was smiling back, even as the faintest of blushes pinked his cheeks.
I opened my mouth to say something most likely corny and over-the-top when my phone chimed with an incoming text. Distracted, I picked it up and swiped my thumb over my screen to unlock it. It was a text from Xan.You up?
Yeah, but why are you? Don’t you usually sleep in till 2 on Saturdays?I typed back.
He sent me a rolling-eyes emoji.Whatevs. My schedule is all funky now that I’m working more hours. The other day, I woke up at 6 AM!
I snorted softly.Gasp! The horror!
I know, rite? It was a longass day. Never been so thankful to go to bed in my life.A moment later, another text rang in.Anyway, what you doing?
