I’m not sure how, but he manages to squeeze himself in between Wren and me.
I pull a face, pretending to think about it. “A little.”
Wren holds an arm out, pointing to the three-seater. “You know there’s a whole other couch.”
Koby lifts a shoulder, ignoring Wren’s comment, and shuffles in further. “I bet Will missed me.”
Wren snorts. “Yeah, like a hole in the head.”
All he gets in return is Koby’s narrowed glare. I swear it’s like being back in high school again when these two—especially Koby—are around.
So many memories flood my brain. As much as I love having them home, I wish it was under different circumstances. The next few days are going to be rough with the funeral. And Will isbarely speaking to me, so I’m glad I have these two to fill the hole in my chest just a fraction.
“Where is Will, anyway? We stopped by the bar first, but it was closed.” Koby glances around as though Will’s going to pop out from behind him.
“Taking a shower,” I say, rubbing the back of my neck. “It’s been hard, man.”
“Shit,” Wren says, wincing. “Want me to talk to him?”
“Sure.” I shrug and rub my knee. “If he’s going to listen to anyone, it’ll be you.”
Wren nods, then pushes up from the couch, Koby following.
“What the fuck are you doing?” Wren pauses when he notices Koby on his heels.
“What?” Koby throws his arms up. “I can come. He’s my friend too.”
“The last thing Will needs is your bullshit. Let me convince him to leave his room, then you can smother him in your love.”
Koby sighs, his arms dropping to his sides. “Fine. Hurry up, arsehole.”
Wren gives me a wink, then saunters towards the stairs, his hands in his pockets. I forget he has this swagger about him—calm in the face of tragedy. Although, he wasn’t always like that. I guess training to be a doctor teaches you to take a deep breath every now and again—you need calm hands in emergency situations.
“So,” Koby says, falling back onto the couch beside me. “Where’s your girl? Matilda and Audrey haven’t shut up about how excited they are to finally meet the woman who brought ‘Will and Emerson’ together.” He rolls his eyes, a smirk on his face.
I raise an eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Koby draws back and scoffs. “Seriously? It was so obvious Will had feelings for you. You were just too stupid to notice.”
He did? I mean, I never realised until recently that I had feelings for him, but I just thought it was a mutual thing.
I run a hand through my hair and let my head drop against the back of the couch. “Shit.”
Koby slaps my thigh. “Don’t stress, big man. You’re together now—that’s all that matters.”
I nod. “Yeah, I guess.”
“So, is she here? I can’t wait to tell Audrey that I got to meet Eden first.” He grins and wiggles his eyebrows at me.
I clear my throat. “She’s not here at the moment.” That’s about all I can say. I don’t have the heart to tell him she left us—or why. I’m not willing to admit it might be over, so I’m going to keep holding onto the hope that she’ll come back.
Unless she doesn’t.
Then I guess we’ll just go back to before.
Before Eden.
Before I fell in love with her and my best friend.
