“She is, until or if she decides not to be.But, between you and me, I want her to stay in our family.”
Silence came through the line for a long minute.Evren knew Jeremiah thought everything through very carefully, and Evren waited for the condemnation.In his head he started putting all the bullet points together.
“I never thought about girlfriends or, hell, even wives.Our lives don’t really scream domestication.But if she decides to stay, then I think you made an excellent choice.”
Shock flooded Evren.“Uh.Who is this and what did you do to my brother?”
“Har-har.I had my assistant run a background check on her.Her childhood was just as lovely as ours.If there’s any place a misfit should be, it’s with us.I’ll protect her with my life, just like I would for you and Sax.”
“And Aera?”
“Do I have to answer that?If the dickhead shows up, then of course yes.He’ll always be our brother.”
“It’s nice to know you love us, you big ole’ softie.”
“Shut up,” Jeremiah grumbled.“Say that again and I’ll kick your ass.”
“Any news of the mole?”
“Sax is still investigating.”
“Okay.Keep me informed if anything changes.Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
Evren ended the call and slid it back into his pocket.Twilight fell, bathing the forest in shadows.Crickets began their symphony as the cool breeze turned the tree branches into a wind chime.He loved Blackmeadow.Loved the peace it gave him.Eventually, he’d get the itch to go back to Vegas, but for now, he was content.
Heading back inside, the delicious smells cooking in the kitchen made his belly rumble.He sat at the island, admiring Lowen as she flittered between the stove and the sink.Knowing he could get used to this.
“I hope you’re hungry,” she teased.
“Starved.”
“Good.Would you mind setting the table?”
“Not at all,” he replied, rising.Searching for the plates, he saw they were still in the same place, and he grabbed napkins and utensils.Moments later, they sat down and the first bite had him moaning.“This is delicious.”
“Thank you,” she said, pink dusting her cheeks.“I really enjoy cooking.Food makes sense, you know?”
“I’m glad for you it does.You cook, I’ll clean.Deal?”
She gave him a huge smile that lit up her beautiful eyes.“Deal.”
