She stared from the passenger's seat. "I don't get it. You're acting like it's no big deal – I mean, that whole listening device thing."

"Yeah, because I don't believe you."

"But I'm no liar."

"Unless you're lying now."

"Which I'm not."

"So you say."

"Fine, don't believe me," she snapped. "But let's get one thing straight. Now that I've told you, you can't blame the hotel if something turns up. After all, wedidtry to find it."

"We?"Just how many people had been crawling around in my fucking hotel room?

"We,me…whatever." Under her breath, she added, "For all the good it did."

The martyr bit wasn't cutting it. "I'll consider myself warned. Is that it?"

"You know what? I don't even know why I told you. I guess that's what I get for being a nice person."

Maybe shewasnice. Maybe she wasn't. It didn't matter either way.Iwasn't nice and saw no reason to pretend otherwise. "Haven't you heard?" I didn't smile because I wasn't joking. "Nice is for suckers."

She shook her head. "You don't mean that."

"The hell I don't."

She sighed. "I don't even know why I'm arguing."

I did.My car was warm and safe. Outside, the weather was cool, and this stretch of road had nearly no traffic. During the time we'd been parked, we'd been passed by only two other vehicles – a beat-up truck and a rusted SUV.

She would be a fool to leave the safety of my car. The road wasn't just empty. It was surrounded by woods on either side. Daytime or not, it looked like a horror movie waiting to happen.

The more I thought about it, the less I liked it.The time for talking was over.Wordlessly, I looked ahead and fired up the engine.

Emily spoke up. "Wait, what are you doing?"

"Leaving."

"But you still haven't apologized."

No shit.I turned to look at her. "And I'm not going to."

"Fine. Then I’m getting out."

The hell she was."I'm not bluffing."

"Good. Because neither am I." And then, without another word, she turned and pushed open the passenger's side door. She hoisted her purse high on her shoulder and stepped out into the cool, crisp air. She slammed the door shut behind her and stepped away from the vehicle, giving me plenty of room to pull away.

Bluff called.

Fuck.

Chapter 16

Emily

With my purse slung over my shoulder, I crossed my arms and waited. For what, I wasn't quite sure. Maybe he would change his mind. Maybe I'd get that apology. Or maybe he'd flip me the bird and squeal off like a madman.
