As I looked into her eyes, I heard my own voice grow softer in the candlelight. "That's what I wanna find out."
Her expression cleared, and she finally smiled. "Oh,doyou?"
"Unless you tell me it's too late."
Her tone grew teasing. "And what if I do?"
"ThenI'llbe the one hounding you."
"Oh, please," she laughed. "You would not."
I loved the sound of her laughter. "Wanna bet?"
"With you? No way." She rolled her eyes. "I'm pretty sure I'd lose. I swear, you always get the best of me."
It was time to admit a hard truth – a truth that hit me where it hurt and wiped the smile from my face. "Andyou'vegotten the worst ofme."
Her gaze softened. "Notallthe time. Sometimes, you were actually kind of…" Her words trailed off, and she never finished. "Never mind."
"Nice?" I said. "I'm still not gonna claim to be that. But I can promise you this. Iwillsolve the problems I created."
"But how?"
"That part's easy." I smiled with anticipation. "And trust me. You're gonna like it."
Chapter 46

I hadn't believed him.And yet, less than ten minutes later, Iwasliking it. In fact, I was liking it a lot more than I ever would have dreamed. And now I couldn't stop smiling. "Are you serious?"
"No joke," he replied. "And if she likes the idea, she can leave tomorrow with Slade."
I knew my sister better than anyone. Vivian wouldn’t justlikethe idea. She wouldlovethe idea – except for one little thing. My smile faltered. "You mean Cameron Slade? That's the partner you meant?"
Reese looked puzzled by my reaction. "Is that a problem?"
"No. Of course not." I bit my lip. "It's just that…well, actually, I'm not sure that he and Vivian will get along."
"Eh, don't worry," Reese said. "They'll be fine."
I didn't share his confidence. "Are you sure?"
"Hey, they're gonnahaveto get along, right?"
What Reese had just offered me was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Vivian to learn the hotel industry at the highest levels by serving as the paid intern of one of his partners.
Of course, he had never mentioned that the partner would be Cameron Slade – someone Vivan wanted to kill.
Okay, maybe she hadn't meant it literally, but their mutual dislike had been pretty obvious. Trying not to sound ungrateful, I asked, "Why him in particular?"
"Because he's the one who agreed to it."
I couldn't even imagine. "Are yousurehe agreed?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Because they met for like five minutes, and all they did was argue."
