Finally, Luc laughed. “I always thought you and Bastien would be well-suited. I wasn’t allowed to speak to him, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be thinking along the same lines. I know I wouldn’t wait around for my enemies to kill me.”

“How long do we have?”

Luc’s smile died. “A week.”

I chewed my lip. It wasn’t long, but we didn’t need the plan to be fancy. “Cause a diversion, get in. Get him out. Get him away.”

“Simple. Good.” Marguerite hummed her approval. “We can hammer out the details in the morning. Let’s aim for two days. Will that be enough for you to organise their transport out of the city?” she asked Luc, who nodded.

“That’s what we’ll do. But now, bed. We need to rest.”

Then, finally, as Marguerite shepherded me like a wayward kitten back to Bastien’s suite, my guards following behind, the pinging in my head started to subside. This was it. The right course of action. Intellectually, I’d had no doubts, but to have my magic confirm it was a huge relief.

I breathed in the first deep breath since this nightmare had begun.

Chapter 73

Bastien

One week. I could escape in under a week. No problem. I waited until the guards transferred me from the Council Chambers to the prison which had a special wing designed for Shifter prisoners. I’d sentenced Shifters to imprisonment here. It wasn’t strong enough to keep me in if I didn’t want to be here. Once I was inside, I would make things right with my mate. I didn’t want any of the humans to guess that I was communicating with her. If they didn’t know that mate bonds could work between a Shifter mate and a human I wasn’t going to be the one to educate them.

In the armoured vehicle that was transporting me, I let her emotions wash over me even though I wasn’t sending anything back to her. I felt my mate’s emotions down the bond. Fury. Determination. Hope.

Her emotions kept me smiling inside, even while I was escorted to a cell by six guards. Not enough to stop me. As strong chains secured me to a wall. The bricks would be the weak point.A heavy door shut behind me. Reinforced steel.Easy peasy.

This was going to get boring. Last time I’d been locked up with my gorgeous mate. All the more reason to get out of here quickly and get back to her.

By now, Luc would have told her about how Maximilian had trapped me.

I lay back on the narrow bed that was the only furniture in the cell. At six foot long, it wasn’t nearly enough for my Shifted body. One star. Do not recommend.

I didn’t care. I could get out of here tonight, but first I needed to convince her that we needed to run. Dropping the barrier I’d put up between us, I sent my love for her down our bond.

Baby, I’m sorry for shutting you out. Are you okay?

Bastien Bowden. I’m so angry with you.

I pictured her cute little forehead creased with anger. Fucking adorable.

As cute as it was when she was angry, this was my fault. I’d been overconfident. I’d been so sure that Maximilian had nothing to charge me with.

This is why you shouldn’t have LEFT ME BEHIND.

Her anger was like a blast of fire. It invigorated me. And turned me on.

Give me more baby.

I am the most powerful Witch in TWO HUNDRED YEARS and you made me stay behind like a princess in a tower.

Unbidden my hand went to my stiffening cock. I imagined her eyes. They would be burning chips of emerald. Her jaw would be set, her luscious lips pressed firmly together. Lips that looked so good wrapped around my cock.

My hand slid up and down. Pumping.

What else did I do wrong?

Bastien Bowden! Are you turned on right now?

You bet I am.
