Luc knocked on the door. Opening it just enough to fit through, I slipped into the corridor. “What happened?”
“Billy got a tipoff from someone at Council headquarters. The Council is going into session to debate whether you need to be impeached for a non-consensual mating.”
Fuck. I ran my hands through my hair. Who had Maximilian spoken to? What had he told them? And how had a session been called without my knowledge? I was President of the Council.
I had to go now. Thanks to Luc’s tipoff I could get to the headquarters in time to present my side of the case. I could head this off before it came to a vote of impeachment.
“One minute,” I told him, turning towards the door and letting myself inside.
My little Pixie looked up at me, concern evident in her eyes. “I have to go, baby. I’m sorry. I don’t know how long it will take.”
“I’m coming with you,” she said.
The memory of her on the floor of Maximilian’s living room flashed into my mind. “No,” I said. “I need you to stay here. I need to know you’re safe.”
Her eyes softened even though her lips were still pressed together. “Professionally, I disagree.” She sighed. “I hate it, but I’ll wait here for you if you take one of the other members of the team.”
“I promise,” I said, turning back to the door. I didn’t need a bodyguard, but for her I would take one.
“At least put on some clothes,” she snapped from behind me. Smirking, I delayed long enough to pull on a shirt and pants. Jealousy looked good on her. I opened the door and walked out. It was time to crush Maximilian Veder.
My brother waited outside the door, falling into step beside me. “I need you to stay here,” I told him. “Work on damage control. Get the lawyers in.”
He nodded. “Got it.”
“Keep our mates safe.”
“You know I will.” When we reached the ground floor he peeled off to his wing while I headed for the front door where Matteo already waited. He followed me to the chopper, settling in beside me as he usually did.
The ride was silent and I used the time to plan the argument I would present to the Council. I would remind them of today’s press release and that an accusation of a non-consensual mating bite was a grave insult. Maximilian couldn’tknow anything. He was just trying to stir up trouble. The only people who knew the full truth about our mating were my little Pixie and me.
Chapter 67
Electra
Bastien had gone, leaving me behind. I felt strange, weirdly disassociated, knowing that my career as a bodyguard was probably over. I forced myself to move to the bathroom for a much-needed shower. When I emerged, there was still no sign of my uniform, but the closet contained a selection of dresses, skirts and tops in pretty colours. All in my size.
Had my Alpha mate arranged these clothes for me?
As if he could sense my thoughts, even from a distance, I felt his amusement.Of course I did.
Are you alright?
Of course, baby. I’m still President. Maximilian may be trying to convince the other Council members that there is a problem, but he’s scrambling now. This reeks of desperation on his part.
Desperate men can be dangerous. While I showered my pre-cog had continued to fire at a low pulse. Enough that I knew there was definite risk involved, although the danger wasn’t immediate. My magic says there’s danger.
I’m tough to kill sweetheart. And I’m very motivated to get back to you and your sweet body.
I rolled my eyes. Such a possessive Alpha. And I loved it.My mental voice was soft when I said,Later babe.
His only response was a deep rumbled,That’s my good fucking girl.I’ll reward you for that later.
Holy hells, that was hot.
When I recovered from the mini orgasm he’d given me, I chose a dress in a pretty pastel green. The neckline was conservative but still showed enough skin that my mate bite was visible. Good, I wanted everyone to see that I was proud of the bite Bastien had given me.
The usual two female Shifter guards were waiting in the corridor when I exited the suite. “Let’s go,” I said. “I need to see Luc.” If I wasn’t going to be Bastien’s bodyguard I was going to learn how to behave as his mate. And for that, I needed information.
