What the fuck?

Something silly? Like falling in love?

“You didn’t seem intoxicated to me,Nicolette.”

She winces. “Yeah. I’m pretty good at holding my liquor. Guess it’s one of the perks of still being in my early twenties.”

My brain is still struggling to catch what she’s trying to tell me, so I go the direct route. “We spent time together last night. You—we—”

“I don’t remember,” she interrupts, looking at the ground.

I go still. “Say that again for me.”

She sucks in a breath and looks up at me, the war of emotions evident in her eyes. “I don’t remember. Any of it. Last night is just one big blur. I’m sorry.”

I don’t hesitate. “Bullshit.”

She flinches. “Tony, please.”

I cup her face with both of my hands in time to catch a rogue tear and wipe it away with my thumb. “Talk to me, baby. What’s changed? If you need time—”

“What’s going on out here?” Amelia interrupts, shielding her eyes from the sunlight.

Nicolette steps out of my reach. “He was just helping me with an eyelash in my eye. Got it, thanks!”

“Then what’s wrong with you, bro?” Amelia nods at me while coming to stand next to Nicolette.

I have no idea how this has gone sideways so fast. I’d be inclined to believe her if her eyes weren’t giving her away. Those sad blue eyes, pulling me into the deep end.

Does Nikki have regrets? Is this about my sister? My head is swirling with questions. But before I make any rash decisions, I need a minute to think. I need to regroup.

I shake my head, keeping my eyes on Nicolette. “Change of plans. I’m flying back home today.” Nicolette’s eyes widen as Amelia gasps.

“Wait, what do you mean? You just got here! Plus, you’re supposed to help us with the move.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll hire a company and have everything packed and shipped for you.”

“Tony, that’s too much money for just a couple of—”

“Don’t worry about it. I have things I need to settle.” I take one step toward the women. “And when you guys fly up, we’ll all hang out. And we’ll alltalk. I’m sure there’ll be a lot to catch up on.” I lean in and kiss Amelia on her head as I discreetly squeeze Nicolette’s hand.

And without a backward glance, I leave the apartment, not knowing whether the piece of my heart I gave away last night will be flying back up to me soon.

I can’t breathe.

Since the moment he turned away and left, my lungs have forgotten how to function.

I lied.

Why did I lie?
