I wrapped my arms around his middle, stopping him. “Breathe.”
His head fell to my shoulder, face nestled into the crook of my neck with big gasping breaths.
“I’m coming,” I told him. “I don’t need to be here to sign the contract.”
He stepped away, face grim. “No. Stay. There’s nothing you’ll be able to do.”
I squinted at him. “You said if we made love, that you wouldn’t be leaving my side. I don’t intend it to be any different for me. I’m going with you.”
I rushed back into my room before he could argue. I threw everything I owned into my suitcase, yanked on underwear, a long skirt, and tied Marco’s T-shirt in a knot at my waist. I needed the smell of him next to my skin to remind me of what we’d done in this room together. Of how we’d joined our lives and souls in a way that wouldn’t end just because we were rushing to help his brother.
For the first time in my life, I was actually desperate to keep a protective bubble around me, shielding me from the rest of the world. But it was too late. Reality had crashed down around us.
