“Darlin’.” I tease with a smile. “You don’t need to bribe me with food. I’ll follow you anywhere.” The comment makes her give me one of her sexy half grins as we stroll to the table.
She fills two cups with cocoa and we sip silently, watching Lexi, Jolene, and various members of the West family and their kids giggling, while they deck out the enormous Blue Spruce in the center of the room. “It’s coming along.”
I nod, scanning the multitude of festive wreaths adorning the walls and the hay bales draped with furry throws, we’ll use for seating. “I doubt we could’ve found a better location.”
“Agreed.” She rolls her eyes and grabs a sugar cookie. “But we’re still missing a band.”
“I’m way ahead of you.”
She cocks her head with a smirk. “Are you, now?”
“I am, indeed.” I wink. “The Ramblers are playing at Boondocks tonight. I have no idea if they’re any good, but we could check them out.” Peach contemplates the thought while she takes a bite of her cookie, her lips soft and full as she chews. I can feel my cock stirring in my jeans at the sight.Keep it together, man. Really? Watching her eat is a turn on now?
She wipes some crumbs off her mouth and grins at me. “The Ramblers, huh? Sounds like a country band.”
“Yeah, I think so,” I reply, taking another sip of hot chocolate. “But they might be good, and we’re running out of time. It’s worth a shot to swing by.”
“My mom dropped me off, so I don’t have a car.”
“Then it’s my lucky day. It would be my pleasure to get you home safely.”After I kiss every inch of you?
“You sure about this?” Her eyes sparkle with temptation. “But this wouldn’t be a date or anything, right? Just so we’re clear.”
“Strictly business.” I stifle a laugh, loving how nervous I’m making her. She can try to ignore her attraction to me, but I clearly see the fire in her eyes and feel the magnetic pull crackling in the air. She tilts her head and eyes me tentatively. “Think of it this way,” I say solemnly, biting back a smile. “You’d be doing your civic duty and helping the town.”
She quirks a brow with a playful glint in her eye. “Civic duty, huh?”
“Absolutely.” I deadpan. “Scout’s honor.”
“Even though you’ve never been a boy scout.”
“Couldn’t let it ruin my reputation,”I tease, offering my hand. “Come on, let’s go.”
For a moment, she hesitates. Her eyes lock onto mine while a silent battle wages within her. Then, with a sigh and a smile, she finally gives in, reaches out, and grabs my hand.Gotcha.
Her warm, soft dainty hand fits perfectly in mine as we walk to the door. I squeeze it gently, and she looks up at me. Why did I let so much time pass between us?
“What?” she asks, her voice laced with a teasing giggle.
I shake my head, smiling. “Nothing. I’m just happy to be here with you.”
She blushes and looks away, but I can see the smile on her face. We step out into the chilly night air with the snow crunching under our feet and she starts shivering.
I quickly take off my jacket and drape it over her shoulders. “Did you forget yours, darlin’?”
“I left it in mom’s car.” She nods, and I assist as she slips her delicate fingers through the enormous sleeves and snuggles into the warmth of my jacket. “Much better. Thanks.”
“Anytime.” I can think of far better ways to warm her up if she’ll let me. My heart races like a school boy as we make our way to the truck with the stars glittering above.
As I unlock the door and help Peach into my truck, I’m tempted to drive her a million miles away from here to a place we can leave the past behind and start fresh.
She’s mine.
