“We good?” Jenny asks, grabbing the basket of clothes. I take it from her.

“We’re good.”

“After Miss ‘It’s Not Like That’ leaves, why don’t cha come over for some pie?” She scrunches her forehead, peering up at me. “I just made a Key lime.”

Damn.Leave?I’m not so sure I want Lexi to leave. “I’ll call ya.” I wink, knowing it’ll placate her for now, and walk Jenny out the back door to the front of the house.

When we step outside, I take in the surroundings my parents worked so hard to keep, staying quiet as I follow Jenny to her SUV.

It’s one of those big-sky-Montana days. Bright blue sky, with a crispness in the air that makes me feel alive, but the last thing I want to do is chit-chat. I lick my lips, hoping to taste Lexi on them. I miss her.

She’s right inside that door, and I miss her. It’s a crazy thought. Maybe we’ll fuck outside too, later. With all due respect to my sister, she’s got to go. Now. Thankfully, she gets right into the car and puts her key in the ignition. No long, drawn-out goodbye conversations today.

“Let me know if any of the Johnsons show up again,” I say, plunking the basket on her passenger seat and shutting the door. I circle back to her side, and she rolls down the window and pokes her head out at me, crinkling her eyes in the sun. “You should call Shane and Ryder and give ’em a heads-up that the crackheads might be paying a visit.”

“Will do.” Jenny settles back into her seat and starts the engine. I fight to keep my feet planted and follow our usual tradition of watching and waving as Jenny pulls out of the driveway, until finally her SUV speeds away.

Smirking, I bring my fingers to my nose and inhale.Lexi.

Now, where was I?

Chapter Ten

How did tiny weightsget sewn into my eyelids? I wonder. I take another second of concentration to pry eyes my open. Now that I’m adjusting to my surroundings, I have no idea where I am. It’s like I’ve been startled out of a dream, but there’s no one here.

Rolling over on the pillow, my eyes crack open wider, and I catch my breath as I take in the luxurious sanctuary I’ve been sleeping in.

Ahh... I must be in Chase’s bedroom. Reality itself is the dream.

Lush, furry throws are strewn on the bed at my feet. To the right, a large pine dresser holds a sparkling vase of cheerful daisies. There’s a decanter of water with glasses on a silver tray next to it. The gas fire in the far-left corner blazes with just the right amount of warmth and light.

Directly in front of me, a breeze blows in through a massive window with just enough force to rustle the pretty linen curtains. Outside, beyond a patio made for swanky parties, carpets of yellow grasses roll over gentle hills to infinity.

Man, am I out of my league.

How long have I been sleeping? The sky is dark blue, two shades away from becoming night, with a few stars already flickering near the moon.
