She smirks, “Not exactly. Royals have the ability to switch between legs and tails easily, but regular merfolk can also get legs if they have an enchanted charm or the right potion—which are rare to come by.”

“Can we get back to our training? I want to finish this before Luca returns,”Mariano grumbles, shifting impatiently. I throw a middle finger in his direction. I’m the one really suffering through this training, not him.

“What in the name of God?” Flavio bursts into the training room without warning, and my body tenses as my eyes meeting Alin’s anxious ones.Oh no. We forgot to lock the door.

“What’s going on here?” he asks again, stepping in front of me. “Colored contacts in your eyes, and now a tailored tail? And what the hell is this fish market smell?” His gaze now turns to Mariano, looking for answers, while the three of us stand silent. None of us seem to know how to respond.

“It’s a long story,” Mariano says from behind Flavio, placing a hand on his shoulder. “We’ll explain everything, but nothing can leave this room.”

We’ll explain everything? Does he know what that means? I send a threatening look to my brother, but he doesn’t even blink. “Pedro, unless you’ve suddenly gained the ability to wipe people’s memories, we don’t have much choice.”

“Wait, what? Wipe memories?” Flavio turns to Mariano, stunned.

“Is this okay?” I ask Alin; after all, we are sworn to keep her secret.

She exhales heavily, nodding. “We don’t have another option.”

She brings her hand back to my tail. “Looks like we’ll have to cut our training short for today. We’ll work on your transformation later.”

My legs return after she strokes my tail a few times, and Mariano tosses the towel he used over my now exposed dick.

Flavio gulps loudly. “Did someone drug me? I need answers, and now!” he demands, a threat lacing his voice, and Mariano pats his back sympathetically.

“This isn’t going to be easy to digest… Sit, we’ll explain everything.”

Bay

The drive felt long and exhausting, especially with that cold-hearted capo—soon-to-be “king”—behind the wheel. I wish I could stretch my human legs for a bit, but Luca won’t let me out of the car until he gives the‘okay’. His enemies are turning my mission into a real pain in the ass, and for the first time in months, I don’t feel a shred of guilt about killing these filthy humans.

“We need to walk a bit to the shore. I need to make sure they’re just following us and not planning anything else,” he explains, staring at his phone, looking for who knows what.

“I could just take control of them now,” I suggest. “It’s only a short walk, right?” I’m eager to get us moving. I’m already nervous about the huntresses supposedly waiting for us in the water.

“Wait. I need to know exactly who we’re dealing with so I can be prepared. I am still waiting for Abert.”

Why is he suddenly explaining himself? He was so impatient before, barely even answering my questions. Is he... scared?

“I told you; I have a way to keep you safe. There’s no need to worry,” I try to reassure him.

“I’m not worried!” he snaps.

“Clearly,” I say, dismissing his tantrum with an eye roll.

He grips the steering wheel tighter in frustration. “You’re lucky you’re family.”

“Wait.” Now he turns to look at me, tension clear in his eyes. “How exactly are you planning to keep me safe? It doesn’t involve me growing a tail too, does it?”

I laugh nervously. “No, you’re not getting a tail. But you might end up tossed into a tsunami by your dear wife…”

“Bay.” His voice is sharp with impatience.

“You’ll have to drink my blood… from my mouth,” I finally admit.

“I have to kiss youanddrink your blood?” He doesn’t hide his shock as I nod.

“Our beloved, hormonal future queen isn’t going to like it—any more than I’m going to hate it—but it’ll keep you safe.”

Luca sighs heavily. “Let’s get it over with.” He leans over reluctantly.
