“We’ll tell him we’re taking care of their bodies. We got the information we needed, they won’t suspect anything,” I fasten the seatbelt carefully around her, the click of it securing in place. “Luca will deal with Will once they confirm they’ve caught him.”
I raise my eyes from the seatbelt to her face, and our noses almost touch from the sudden movement. Her eyes lock onto mine, and my breath catches. There’s so much darkness in her world, but the innocence and light in her amethyst eyes make me want to shield her frommyhorrible world—from both of these horrible worlds.
Bay chuckles softly and brushes her lips against mine quickly.Fuck. She doesn’t need any hunter’s voice to control me if she wants to; if she keeps looking at me like that, I don’t think there’s anything I wouldn’t do for her.
“Can we go?” Luca’s voice comes from the front, hard to miss the impatience in his tone as he looks at us through the rear view mirror.
“Yes, they’re tied up well back there.” I inform him and then turn back to Bay’s piercing gaze, leaning toward her ear. “If you keep looking at me like that, we won’t be going anywhere,” I whisper, a sly grin spreading on my lips as they brush against her ear.
She bites her lip gently and let out a silent moan as I lightly nibble on her earlobe. “You want to kill me here?” I breathe heavily into her ear, and she immediately pushes me back into my seat.
“Not here!” she mouths, and I chuckle, reluctantly shifting my gaze forward to Mariano.
“It’ll take us at least four and a half hours to reach a quiet beach from here, and from there, we have a very long swim to the Coral of Life,” I inform them, and Mariano turns his head back to look at me.
“Pedro, we’re going to need you back in New York. Abert won’t be able to hold things down there for much longer. Alin will swim with Bay,” he says with a stern expression. I know my brother well; he’s holding back in front of Bay—but this isn’t a request, it’s an order.
I nod in agreement, clenching my fists in anger. How can I send her off alone to face the very thing she’s been trying to run from?
Mariano turns his gaze forward again, and I curse quietly under my breath, ignoring the electric tingling in my palm, which immediately fades when Bay places her hand over my clenched fist.
“I’ll be fine. It’s not the first time I’ve hunt for him,” she smiles at me, but the smile doesn’t reach her eyes. “I also need to speak with him alone,” she adds in a whisper, now avoiding my gaze.
Over my dead body.“Talk to the dragon that’s been hunting you, face to face, alone? No way, that’s not going to happen,” I state as a fact in a loud roar, which causes Luca and Mariano to immediately turn back and look at us.
“There are things I need to understand to save all of us, and only the Guardian can give me those answers,” she explains, her voice so calm compared to the storm raging in my head.
She’s now staring out the window, watching the bright streetlights cutting through the darkness that’s wrapped around the night. People are out enjoying themselves while we’ve got three tied-up compelled people in the trunk and a water dragon to deal with.
“I don’t think you understand how things work,” I grit out, frustration laced in my voice, not even sure how to release the rage boiling inside me. Igrab her arm to pull her attention back to me. “You never agree to the terms of someone who’s trying to hunt you.”
Her eyes meet mine in an instant, filled with obvious pain, and I bite the inside of my cheek to regain control before I burn all of us alive in a firework show right here in the car.
“I’m not agreeing to his terms. He knows what I need, and I know what he needs. I’m going to fix the damage I caused.” Her brows furrow with determination, making it clear she has no intention of backing down from this idea.
I curse under my breath and slam my fist hard against the car door to my right.
“Pedro, this is their world. They know it best—they’ll find a solution and return safely,” the capo says, trying to reassure me, though I know if he could, he’d press a gun to my forehead right now to remind me to get my head straight and focus on my role. He won’t say it again—point made. The rest of the ride is silent.
“Pedro, get your ass out of the car already. We don’t have time to waste,” Mariano commands, jumping out of the SUV as Luca pulls up at the end of the street, a few houses down from Flavio’s place.
I give Bay one last look, torn between two worlds, fighting every fiber of my being just to manage to open this cursed car door.
Bay grabs my arm just before I step onto the sidewalk, and I quickly turn back to her, a small flicker of hope rising in my chest that maybe she’ll stay with me.
“I’ll be fine, I promise,” She whispers, her lips brushing mine, pressing them against me like she’s trying to inject me with strength for both of us. I cup her face in my hands, deepening the kiss. This time, it’s not a kiss of wild passion—it’s a mark of ownership, filled with the heavy emotional storm that surrounds us, a clear promise that this won’t be the last time. Hell, I won’t let it.
Mariano’s hand pulls me out of the car, breaking our kiss and pull me away from Bay in an instant. She shuts the SUV door behind her, and Luca presses the gas pedal, disappearing down the street in seconds. Wait, where’s Alin?
I turn around in rage towards Mariano, yanking my arm out of his grip in an instant. “You said Alin was going with her. Where’s Alin?” I grit out my question. Maybe today’s the day I finally get to strangle my brother. The electric currents begin to spark in my hands again, and I’ve already crossed the point of no return.
“Alin will join her later,” he says casually. “Come on, Flavio’s waiting for an update. They caught Will, and they’re sure we took care of the French bodies already,” he adds, heading toward the Flavio’s house.
“I know that tone,” I stop in my tracks, the venom in my voice unmistakable. “Alin isn’t going to join her...” I voice the fear that’s now flooding through me, praying he won’t confirm it.
He continues walking silently, and that’s all the confirmation I need. My whole body trembles now, electric currents flooding every cell, surging from my hand before I even realize what’s happening.
Mariano drops to the pavement, avoiding getting hit. “Now do you see why Alin needs to stay here? You’re a ticking time bomb. You need to control your power!”
