“Wasn’t that around the same time you had Gus Carter arrested?” Morgan asked. “A week after you filed the report?”
“Yes, exactly one week after I filed that report, I met you and Ava at that bar for the first time. I had set it up with Tom that I would be there to get Stella back. We’ve put him on our top ten list, but were waiting until Carl, Bernie, or you came back to go any further.”
“Have you researched what I was looking into before Lucas showed up?” Carl asked.
“No, what were you looking at? I know you said something, but can’t remember what it was, I was too engrossed in trying to remember the guy from the photo.”
“I had just commented that I was wondering why a particular vehicle was at the reception.”
“What’s wrong with a vehicle?” Morgan frowned at him.
“It came back registered to a dead man.”
“Who?” Everyone present and, on the phone, asked.
“Gus Carter.” His statement left silence behind. The people at the hospital stared at the man like he had gone crazy, and he only shrugged. “I was looking into it when Lucas came. I figured finding Morgan and Wyatt was more important at the time.”
“Thank you for that,” Morgan said. “Thanks, Joyce, we’ll keep you updated, keep doing what you are, and I should be home in a few days.”
“Take your time, we’re going over all the information again, and instead of putting a pin in something, we’re investigating further.”
“Good, I was going to suggest that.” They hung up, and Lucas stood tall when they turned to him and congratulated him on a job well done. Owen stayed with him to get his statement while Morgan and Carl went back to the room. The two FBI agents still had custody of the man, and Carl looked back to call out,
“You want to deal with this trash, or do you want me to call Stokes?”
“I’ll deal with it,” Owen said as he finished up with Lucas and came over. One of the FBI agents went with Owen to wait for backup, while the other stayed to continue to guard Wyatt.
“What did the guy say to you?” Lucas asked at one point.
“He said we could leave because he was there to run tests on the patient.”
“Did he give the patient’s name?” Morgan asked. At their confused looks, she sighed. “Did he say he was here to run tests on Mr. Erwin?”
“No, he just said, ‘the patient’.”
“Okay,” Morgan nodded, then looked up when several doctors strode down the hall toward them. She recognized them as the ones that had come into the room when Wyatt had woken.
“Mrs. Erwin, we need to talk.”
“What is it?” Morgan hadn’t realized she’d stumbled until she felt strong arms around her and looked over to see both Lucas and Carl had caught her.
“Let’s go in and talk with your husband.”
They all went into Wyatt’s room, and he looked up and smiled at Morgan as he held his hand out to her, He didn’t acknowledge anyone until Morgan was by his side. Satisfied, he looked at Carl and held out his hand to him to shake, then nodded to Lucas. Finally, Wyatt turned to the doctor. “What’s up?”
The doctor looked around the room, drew in a deep breath, then let it out slowly. “There’s no easy way to say this.”
“Don’t sugarcoat anything,” Wyatt said. “Tell me what you have to.”
“Okay, based on what you told me when you woke, remember how you said you could hear everything, and you felt people touching you, but you couldn’t move, nor could you open your eyes.”
“Yes, but if I could say something else.”
“About?”
“After you left, I was thinking about what I said. It wasn’t that I felt them feel for broken bones, or the pulse in my neck, it was more of a sense they were doing that. If you know what I mean?” Wyatt started to cock his head to the side, but the doctor yelled at him to stop.
“What’s wrong?” Morgan asked in shock.
