“Yeah, but we didn’t invite him out to harass her, I swear. He’s our foreman for several jobs. He’s a great guy, and he knows his shit when it comes to construction. He’s trustworthy, and puts in longer days than any of us.”
He watched as his sister strode up to them, then paused when she asked, “Is Chuck going to be eating with us?”
“He said no. When we explained to him what we intended, he said that he would cook his own meals in the camper. Not to worry about him.”
Morgan glared, then went over to the driver’s side, after adjusting the front seat to her shorter legs, she glared over at him. “Youhave to tell Wyatt.”
“Shit.” She heard his whisper and grinned at the expression of dread on his face.
CHAPTER6
Ava grinnedas she noted her GPS indicated only a few miles until she reached her destination. She looked ahead of her, and frowned when she spotted something in the road. Slowing down, she had to suddenly brake hard and keep her bike standing upright when a huge-ass, black pick-up truck flew onto the road from the right, nearly taking her out. If she hadn’t been paying close attention, she would have been wiped out. Once the bike was under control, with it still running, she whipped her helmet off, put the kick stand down and dismounted. With her helmet in her hand, she strode toward the man who had slammed on his brakes and was getting out of the truck.
“What the hell!” Ava screamed at the man and swung her helmet toward him. She took a little satisfaction when she connected with his impressive chest. “You idiot! You could have killed me!” When the man went to say something she swung her helmet again. “And don’t tell me you didn’t see me! I watched you and you never even looked this way! You could have killed me!” she repeated, and swung her helmet again, except for this time, he grabbed it from her.
“I’m sorry, I was in a hurry, and no one ever travels this road.”
“That’s not an excuse!”
“I know!” Justin yelled back at her, then stepped back holding her helmet. “I’m sorry, if someone would have done that to me, I would have been just as pissed as you are.”
“You ride?”
“I do. God, I’m so sorry.” The man ran his hand through his hair, and didn’t react when Ava took her helmet back. Before anyone could say anything, they turned toward where Justin had come out onto the road when someone blew a horn. Ava walked back toward her motorcycle, and let the man deal with whatever was going on. At the last minute, she turned back and yelled at him.
“Hey!”
“What?”
“I don’t know what the hell you’re doing, but you had better clean up that crap in the road before someone has an accident. I don’t care if no one travels this road or not! It’s dangerous! You don’t want to be sued for causing someone’s death.” She climbed on her motorcycle, donned her helmet, then took off, barely driving five miles an hour when she tried to go through the mud on the road.
“What was that all about?” Chuck asked his friend as he waited for a response.
“When I pulled out onto the road I almost sideswiped her.”
“Jesus, Justin, what the hell?”
“I know, I was in a hurry and didn’t really look like I should have. I think she had slowed down, because of all the mud on the road, you’ll have to have the dozer operator come out and clear it.” He pointed and when Chuck looked at the mess, he winced.
“What are you going to do about the woman?”
“Nothing I can do now since she left.” Justin sighed and looked in the direction the Harley had driven. Shaking his head, he went back to his truck and pulled it off to the side of the road. Whatever he’d been in a hurry to do slipped his mind. He had a mess to clean up, his only thought was that he hadn’t hit the female rider. Though she was beautiful when she’d been yelling at him, he doubted he would ever see her again. He shook his head and got to work.
* * *
Ava was upsetas she drove away from her potential accident, but she knew she had someplace she needed to be. Two miles down the road, she slowed again and turned on her turning signal to take the driveway on the left. She followed it and came to a stop before a beautiful three story house. This time when she stopped, she shut the bike down, and hung her helmet on a mirror. After getting off the bike, she stretched, and made her way up the steps to the front porch. Not finding a doorbell, she opened the screen door and knocked on the front door. After closing the screen door, she stepped back, turned and looked out at the view from the porch.
“May I help you?” came a voice from behind her. Ava turned and saw the woman standing there.
“Yes, my name is Ava Hanson and I’m looking for Morgan Stuart.”
“Oh, come in. Morgan told me she was expecting you.” Ava followed the woman inside and down a hall where they stopped before a closed door. The woman knocked and opened it when they heard someone call out.
“Ava Hanson for you.”
“Thanks, Dolly. I hate to ask, but could you bring us some coffee?”
“None for me,” Ava spoke. “But, I’d love a glass of something cold.”
