“What’s this?” Silver asked, when she saw Finn’s jaw tighten, and Ronnie placed her hand on her husband’s shoulder. Silver handed her the e-mail that had been sent to Chad about how she was sleeping with the owner of the Larson Foundation.

Anna took the paper, read it, then looked at Silver with stars in her eyes, and a giant grin on her face. “I know right, it was my goal to capture the elusive owner of Larson’s, and I couldn’t believe my lucky stars when he picked me up Club Nitro after only working here for a few days. I knew my hard work would pay off.”

“What hard work?” Ronnie demanded.

“You know he’s married, right?” Lorna asked for her friend.

“No, he’s not, and it takes a lot to look this good. If I play my cards right, then I’ll be Mrs. Marc Larson in no time, and I can quit this job and live in the lap of luxury that I want. He promised me I could.”

“Do you have a picture of him?” Silver blurted out, to stop the others from throttling her.

“Well, no, but I did spend Saturday night with him.”

“Do you have his phone number?”

“No.”

“Do you know the people in this room?”

They all watched as Anna looked around, and began to finally realize that she might be in trouble. “There’s you, Lorna, and I don’t know the others.”

“She’s Deb, she’s with the HR office. You should have met her when you were called in for your interview, then given the paperwork to sign when we hired you. Sitting here at the end of my desk is Mr. Finnegan Larson, the owner of the Larson Foundation, and his wife, Veronica.”

Anna looked at Silver in shock, then threw her head back and laughed. “Good one. Now I know you’re lying, because that is not the man I hooked up with.” Anna watched as Finn reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his wallet. He extracted his license and showed it to her.

“Iam Finnegan Larson, and this is my wife, Veronica. I can assure you that the man you met at Club Nitro was not me. You were hoodwinked, or catfished, or whatever, but I didn’t hook up with you. Now that has been cleared up—” His tone brooked no arguments from anyone, so he continued, “—I regret to inform you that you are terminated as of now.” Finn held up his hand when Anna went to say something. “You are being let go because of your tardiness. Along with you sending the wrong information to our vendors, and sending personal information to them. I’m talking about that e-mail where you will give them double their pay once you’re married to whomever conned you. Dismissed.” He stood and glared down at Anna. “You have one hour to do your exit interview and vacate the premises. I’ll make sure to inform Sid down at the front desk to get your badge from you, and that you are never to darken the doors of the Larson Foundation ever again.” He took Veronica’s hand and quickly strode out. At the doorway, he paused and looked back. “Ladies, if you run into any problems, call down to Sid. I will appraise him of our problem.” Then, he was gone.

Silver and Lorna exchanged looks, then turned to Deb with questions in their eyes. Deb took over then and gave Anna her exit interview. Before she was done, Sid arrived, and in a matter of minutes everything was done, and Anna was escorted out of the office, then out of the building.

“That was weird,” Lorna said, when it was just her and Silver left in Silver’s office.

“What?”

“Anna didn’t put up the kind of fuss I thought she would. She seemed the type to start yelling and screaming, then throwing things. I kept picturing your stapler going through that window.” Lorna grinned as she pointed to the glass that looked out into the room where others worked.

“Maybe she realized she’d been duped, and is saving her rage for the man that lied to her.”

“There is that.” Lorna nodded and stood. “You need anything?”

“I’m good. I want to get as much done as I can before we have to start interviewing for another assistant tomorrow.”

“Yeah, me too.” Lorna said, then quickly left, but she returned less than five minutes later with two cups of coffee. She placed one on the front of Silver’s desk, then settled in the seat she’d just vacated.

“I know this is none of my business, but I’m assuming your dinner date with Patch went well, if he brought you to Ronnie and Finn’s place Saturday?”

Silver looked up and grinned at her friend. “Yep. I’ve never been so bold with anyone as I was with Douglas. Something about him makes me want to speak loud and clear on what I want, and this is the only time I’ll say it, but yes, we’ve started a sexual relationship. I don’t know how he feels, but after spending the weekend with him, he’s the one for me. I’m not going to push it, I’ll wait to see what happens.” Silver sighed as she picked up her coffee, blew on it, then sighed again. “Besides, he’s on duty for the next nine days. I don’t know whether I’ll be seeing him or not. I did give him the key you returned to me, so we’ll see if he uses it or not.”

“I’m happy for you, Silver.” Lorna stood, walked around, and hugged Silver. She picked up her coffee, then left the office to return to her own.

Chapter 20

“This is Sheriff Bronson, how may I help you?” Amos asked the caller, after he picked up the line the desk duty officer said was for him.

“Sheriff Amos Bronson?”

“Yes, how may I help you?”

“My name is Agent Tamara Babcock, I’m based out of the Chicago office of the FBI. I’m calling to talk to you about the attack that occurred several weeks ago.”
