“Is this woman involved in your case?”

“Damn, I didn’t think you’d pick up on that, but yes, she is. I think this would be great for her, but then I’m someone on the outside looking in. I don’t know how it could go. Once everything is revealed, I could be the best thing since sliced bread, or the scum on the bottom of her shoe. I have no idea how it’s going to play out, and because of the NDA I signed with my client, I’m not allowed to give her a heads up. She’s going to be blindsided.”

“Just one question, then we’ll change the subject.”

“What’s that?”

“Did you know she would be involved in your case before you hooked up with her?”

“What do you mean?”

“Did you hook up with her to gather information?”

“NO!I never started the case until days after I met her. I met her on a Friday, and didn’t get the case until the Monday after I met her.”

“Then if she thinks you’re scum on the bottom of your shoe, and you still have feelings for her, then you can point that out. You met her before.”

“There is that,” Andy said, and before they both changed the subject, he said, “And we didn’t tell each other our names the first time we were together.”

Chapter 20

Lorna took one last look at herself in the mirror, and nodded. “This is as good as it gets.” She wore a pale blue dress that came to her knees, sheer stockings, and her most-comfortable pair of taupe heels. Not that heels were comfortable, but these were. She knew she’d be on her feet the rest of the afternoon, and all night, so she dressed mainly for comfort, more than style. Not that her dress was anything to sneeze at. If she wanted style, she’d have worn the new black pumps with five-inch heels, but she wasn’t willing to kill her feet for style. With one last look at herself, she hurried to the front of her apartment at the knock on the door. Knowing who it was, she whipped the door open, and stared in shock at the man standing there.

“Holy Monk Balls, you look fabulous.” Lorna whistled as she studied Andy standing there in a dark-blue suit.

“I didn’t remember what shade of blue you said, so I went with all three.” He indicated his dark blue suit, pale blue shirt, and medium blue tie.

“It works. You are extremely handsome. I like it.”

“Thank you, and you’re no shrinking violet yourself. You’re stunning.”

“Thank you,” Lorna said as she felt her cheeks heat. She stood back and allowed Andy to enter. Instead of coming all the way in, he paused long enough to give her a kiss. It didn’t take long for it to turn into a toe curler. They stepped back, breathing hard.

“Sorry, but I have a feeling we won’t get to do that the rest of the night. Thought I’d get it out of the way.”

“Thank you, and you’re right. I’m only sorry that you’re going to have to stand around and do nothing until the event begins. I have to be there early to make sure everything is running smoothly.”

“Hey, I’m here for you. If you need me for anything, let me know. I’m not afraid to be put to work.” Andy grinned, then frowned. “Just don’t give me a tray of glasses filled with liquid. I’m guaranteed to drop it.”

Lorna laughed along with him. “Me too. Monk, I even stubbed my toe twice last week just walking across the carpet.” She shook her head and removed her shoe to point. There was only a small Band-Aid on it now, but it was still there.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be, are you ready to go?”

“I am. Do you need anything?”

“Just my evening bag.” She grabbed the bag off the table beside the door and they exited. Lorna didn’t know if it shocked her or not when he held out his hand for her keys, and locked the door. He then pocketed them. When Lorna frowned at him, he only said it would be less bulky in her bag. They went down to the garage, and instead of taking Lorna’s car, Andy escorted her to his vehicle. After helping her in, he went to the driver’s side and climbed in. Looking at her, he grinned. “Where exactly are we going?”

“Do you know where the aquarium is? Downtown?”

“Not really.”

“Remember when we first met? At that club?”

“Yes.”

“Six blocks north.”
