Sterling:Sorry I didn’t get a chance to say hello
Danica:That’s ok
Danica:I mean I didn’t expect you to
Danica:You looked really busy
Danica:Can I ask you something though?
Sterling:Of course
Danica:Do you really think no one’s going to save us but us? What about allies?
Sterling:Truth? I go back and forth on it. Some allyship feels a little fickle to me, like supporting our lives is a trend for a minute before the next trend hits
Danica:I get what you’re saying
Sterling:But?
Danica:All movements need a big tent. We need to fit everybody in who wants to be in and let them help in the ways they can for as long as they can. We need the dilettantes and the committed, the radicals and the compromisers, the peacemakers and the firebrands, the optimists and the pissed off cynics, the newbies and the old heads.
Sterling:Yeah you’re probably right
Danica:Only “probably”?
Sterling:I like to think things through
Danica:I noticed that about you
Sterling:Noticed it about you too
Sterling:Don’t go thinking I’m a creeper or nothing but I checked the sign-up sheet after the meeting and I didn’t see you on there
Danica:I was only there because my friend Maya wanted someone to go with her
Danica:I’m not going to sign up. I don’t like joining things
Sterling:How come?
Danica:Too much mess and drama. Everybody disagreeing with everybody else. People jockeying for position.
Sterling:All that is true
Danica:How do you deal with all the chaos and confrontation?
Sterling:I thrive on it to be honest. I like the energy and I like corralling everybody
Sterling:My parents are community organizers
Sterling:Plus they’re both teachers
Danica:So it’s in your blood?
Sterling:I guess so
Sterling:What about you? How’d you get into writing?
Danica:You know I write?
