“Theo.” I whisper, relieved to see a friendly face.
“What are you doing here, Nora?” He whispers as he gets closer to me.
“I am here to speak to my father.” His lips press into a thin line.
“Tobias told you?” I nod. “Then you know why I can’t let you go in there.” I roll my eyes. I am so sick of thesedamnmen thinking they can tell me what to do.
“You can’t stop me, Theo. I have to know what my father knows. What he learned. Who he learned it from. I don’t believe it. I have to know.” I plead, beg. I aim straight for his heart, hoping it’s weak enough to let me in.
“It’s not safe, Nora.”
“Then come with me.” I whisper, softening my gaze and biting my lip. He glances around at his men before reluctantly nodding. I push past him quickly, before he can change his mind, and he follows closely behind.
“Just don’t run off, Tobias will have my head.”
“He’ll already have mine. He doesn’t know I’m here.” He groans and I can hear his knuckles popping as he nervously clenches his fists.
“Elaenor, you need to stop running from the safety of the palace.” I scoff and turn to face him.
“I run one time and you hold it against me?” He fights a smile before he chuckles softly. We walk in silence for a few moments before we reach the gate at the other end of the bridge. I nod at the kingsguard stationed and they motion for us to enter.
“We need to talk at some point.” Theo says quietly behind me.
“About what?” I play ignorant as we cross through the stone wall.
“That night.” I stop walking once we are far enough away from the men at the gate. I nervously look around the small town before turning to face him.
“We were both drunk, Theo.”
“Yes, and people who are drunk do things they wouldn’t normally do that they actually reallywantto do.” He explains and I nearly roll my eyes.
“That’s confusing.”
“Nora.”
“Stop calling me that.” I snap.
“I love you.”
“You’ve known me for two months; you can’t possibly love me.”
“Do you love Tobias?” I bite at my lower lip again.
“I think I do.” I admit.
“What about when he hurts you?” My brows furrow.
“He hasn’t hurt me in a long time, Theo.” I shake my head and start walking again. “Even then, it was an accident.”
“Are you sure about that?” I stop, spinning around.
“What are you talking about?” I snap.
“It seems your husband has ordered a large shipment of hemlock root and poppy.” He says nonchalantly and I cock a brow.
“Okay, and?” I push.
“Do you not know what that is?”
