“Why, thank you, professor. You look edible, also.”

I smiled at the predictable nature of our exchange.

We walked to a nearby café that made sandwiches as well as fancy original drinks. We paid for a couple of paninis and two coffees. Once we’d found a table and taken off our coats, I sat back and regarded Daphne with a quizzical expression.

“So, what’s too important to talk about over the phone?” I was truly curious. This was unprecedented. Normally, she told me all sorts of things over the phone.

To my utter amazement, Daphne blushed and squirmed in her seat.

“Oh my God.”

“What?” she said, frowning and shifting again. She glanced behind her to see what had so amazed me.

“Who the hell are you and what have you done with Daphne?”

She realized I was messing with her and gave me a look. “Oh, that’s funny.”

“You’re blushing.”

“I am not. It’s cold out.”

“We’re inside.”

“Nic…stop. I need you to be serious.”

I leaned forward, curious as all hell as to what Daphne wanted to talk about.

“I’m very serious. What is so important you needed to get me into a booth at a restaurant to tell me?”

Daphne opened her mouth, sighed, then closed it. She adjusted her seat again. Irritation began to bubble inside me.

“Daf, sit still and tell me what is wrong.”

She continued to hem and haw until I slapped my hand on the table, making her jump and eliciting dirty looks from other patrons.

“You probably don’t know that I’ve often fantasized about hauling you over my knee, pulling down your panties and walloping that pert backside.”

She parted her rouged lips and inhaled a gasp. “Nic! Really?”

I grinned. “Maybe. Sure. And I’ll do it if you don’t tell me what you dragged me here to tell me.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I’m not scared of you.”

I shrugged and drilled her with a Dom glare. She didn’t hold out very long.

“Fine. I’ll tell you. It’s…it’s embarrassing.” She looked everywhere but at me.

“Tell me.”

She nodded, licked her lips. “I think I’m in love.”

That was thelastthing I had expected Daphne to say.

“You’re—you’rewhat?”

She threw me a smile like a debutante at her first cotillion…andgiggled.

“I’m in love. I think. Probably. Maybe?” She dropped her chin in her hand and giggled again.
