Proof that I was yet another secret listener had Hades swearing up a storm.
“Nightfall. Don’t be late.”
The line went dead, and the four of us stood in heavy silence.
“Are we sure we want to do this?” Malice asked. “It could still be a trap.”
“We don’t have a choice,” Chaos said. “Whether it's a trap or not, this might be our only chance to smoke Lucifer out on our own terms.”
Hearing War echo my own thoughts made me feel pretty fucking good about myself. I was so much more than a drop-dead gorgeous face. And body. And dick.
“Someone needs to stay with Merri. We can’t just leave her here with Christian as her only protector.” Grim glanced over his shoulder at the house, a light blazing in Merri’s window making it clear exactly where she was.
It was on the tip of my tongue to volunteer, but Chaos shocked me by beating me to it.
“I will.”
“You don’t want to run off into the thick of battle?” I asked.
“I’m the best choice to stay behind and play bodyguard. I literally tore that Knight’s head off to save her.”
He had me there.
Nodding, I conceded to him. “As you were.”
“Why don’t you stay with him?” Grim said. “Two sets of eyes are better than one.”
“Is that safe?” Malice asked.
“You and I are more than capable of dealing with Hades.”
“And if it’s not Hades?”
“Then Merri still has a chance because out of all of us, Chaos and Sin are the most likely to succeed.”
It was a shocking vote of confidence. And mildly terrifying, if I was being honest. I don’t think Grim had ever said a kind word about me. But more than that, I don’t think I ever heard him admit that he could lose.
And wasn’t that the fucking scariest possibility of all?
Chapter
Twenty-Eight
MALICE
“Goddamn bloody dress codes. I’m a grown man. I’m practically a god. No one should be able to dictate how I dress myself. Especially not a private club in Las Vegas.”
Sin leaned in my doorway, arms crossed and a petulant frown curving his lips. “I can’t believe you’re going to my city without me.”
I glanced at his reflection in my mirror. “You’re the one who opted to stay behind and help Chaos with Merri. Besides, you’re far too recognizable.”
“The people love me. What can I say?”
“Well, obviously you can’t say anything without drawing attention to yourself. I don’t have that problem.”
Sin snorted as I pulled a deep plum button-down out of the wardrobe. I glanced between him and the nearly black fabric. “What?”
“Nothing,” he said with an absolutely false air of innocence.
