With her breathless demands making her want run thick and hot through her veins, Sera gave her more of what she needed until her mouth was tired, until spit and her slick dripped down her chin, and Parisa came, moaning and crying out, hand gripping the back of Sera’s neck.Sera slipped her tongue through the mess as much as she could before Parisa was writhing from overstimulation.

Sera crawled back up the bed, falling beside Parisa. She heaved out a breath as Parisa collapsed against her, hair spilling everywhere as she found a place for herself in the crook of Sera’s neck.

“So that was nice,” Sera panted, stroking her fingers through Parisa’s hair.

“Everything with you is good.”Parisa’s voice was muffled by Sera’s body.“But heavens, that was something else.I’ll have to pay you back for that soon.”

“Anytime, Pari.There’s no rush.”

Parisa lifted her head, fondness in her gaze.“There might not be a rush, but I tend to do what I want to do.”She glanced at the floor and made a face.“Sorry about your shirt.”

Sera puffed out a laugh.“I really couldn’t care less at this point.”

“I got a little carried away.Adrenaline can do a lot to a person.”

Sera curled her lips into a grin.“Would you like to get carried away again?”

“Absolutely.Yes.”Parisa yawned.“Just give me a few minutes. After that last burst of energy, I think I’m spent.”Her eyes fluttered shut.

“Take as much time as you need,” Sera said, snuggling into the sheets and closer to her Alpha. It took her a moment to realize Parisa was already asleep, her lips parted as steady breaths came in and out.

With everything that happened today, Sera was far too awake to sleep now.She hadn’t fought like Parisa had and, after what they just did, her body was buzzing with energy. Her mind raced after each passing thought until she wasn’t sure what she was thinking about. She lay there, staring at the ceiling with Parisa next to her, and finally let herself process the day.

She could have lost everything. She could have lost Parisa. In her rational mind, she knew that it wasn’t going to happen, but her emotions refused to listen. The delayed fear set in and she rolled onto her side to hold Parisa closer.

She couldn’t make it through losing the family she had now.Losing her family once already made this one even more precious.

Sera buried her face in Parisa’s thick hair and breathed her in.

Parisa awoke some time later, slowly stirring to life.Sera had spent that time swaying between worry, grief, and gratitude for what she had.

Wrapping an arm around Sera’s waist, Parisa whispered, “Nice to wake up and find you so close.”

“I wasn’t going to leave.”

“Somehow I knew that.”Parisa buried her face against Sera’s chest.

Thoughts swirled within her and Sera knew she could choose to bury them again or open the door wider and let Parisa in.“Do you ever think about your past?Your human past?”

“Sometimes, but it was so long ago that often it feels like it happened to someone else. Why?Do you?”

“More lately than before.”She paused, feeling that twist in her chest.“Jo reminds me of my brother.Memories that were fuzzy are clearer now and I see his face in people I see at the bakery or around town. It’s like he’s haunting me.”

“Or still with you.”

“But that’s the thing. Can he still be with me when I barely remember him?Or any of the rest of my family? The transformation took so much away from me.So did those years of madness. You helped piece me back together —” Sera turned onto her side to face Parisa. She grabbed hold of her hand and intertwined their fingers.“But there’s so much I lost. Can’t it all stay buried?”

“Do you want it to?”

Sera nodded against her pillow.“It’s easier that way.”

Parisa snuggled closer, tucking her head under Sera’s chin and resting against her chest, their hands still woven together between them.“I used to think the same.I pushed away any thoughts of my family because they’d never been who I’d needed them to be for me.And it worked for a long time, but slowly, those bitter memories were replaced by softer ones and I began to long for their company even though many of them were long since gone.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I made my choice and I don’t regret it.But you didn’t have a choice.”Parisa pressed a hand to Sera’s heart.“I mourn for you, those years you lost.”

Sera wanted to brush it off with some dismissive remark, but instead she sat with the feelings that welled up inside of her.“I wish I could forget, but there’s something bittersweet about not being able to.It hurts, but I want it to.”She shut her eyes tight.“Not that I want to hurt, but at least then they’re not —”
