“Come on, Tae. I’m waiting,” Gabi sang, swaying side to side. I looked at her and for a brief moment I wondered if I had been born like her, thin with light skin, a bright smile, and light eyes would my mother have been able to find love in her heart for me? I didn’t think she hated me but she damn sure wished I came in a different package.

“Tae, come on,” Gabi said, impatience tingeing her tone.

“Wow, did she call you Tae? That’s so…ew.”

“I know. I gotta check her on that shit. I hate it.” He glanced over his shoulder at the waiting Barbie doll then back at me. “I’ll text you later?”

“Yeah…sure.” I shrugged. I was hoping it would fend off the sting.

“You know I’m just doing this because…” His words hung in the air and I nodded. I knew he wanted to get closer to her for his own personal gain. He wanted to feel her out. I hoped he didn’t lose himself in the process and end up doing more than securing a spot at Imperial.

“Go,Tae,” I joked. He didn’t laugh, instead he reached out and squeezed my hand. It was an unspoken promise…or maybe an unspoken apology. Either way, I smiled a little, already forgiving him.
