“It’s fucking true. I’m in love with you, Blake. I always have been.”

“Stop it. I don’t want any part of whatever you and Gabi have cooked up. Just leave me and my heart out of it, Devanté.”

“Don’t push me away because you’re scared and confused, Blake, please. Let’s talk. I’ll tell you the truth about everything.”

“Too late.” I wiped the tears burning their way down my smooth cheeks then I squeezed my eyes shut willing the emotions to stop leaking through. “Leave before I call the police.”

“Really? You’d call the fucking police on me? Me?”

“Go away, Devanté!”

“Fine. Fuck it. You don’t want to hear the truth then I can’t force you. I’m done trying.” Finally, his heavy footsteps carried him away and I fell to pieces against the door.

Salty, sharp, jagged pieces of the naïve girl I used to be.

When I was done wiping my own tears…when I stood up again…I would emerge from my cocoon fresh and armored. I wouldn’t let anyone slip through the cracks again unless they proved themselves. Even if that meant my heart had to turn to stone.

So be it.
