“Later, Molly. I promise.”

“Devanté, Blake! Breakfast is ready!” I didn’t need to hear my mother call me to know breakfast was ready. I smelled the bacon and eggs.

“Ooh, breakfast,” Blake chirped hopping out of bed. She pulled on a pair of leggings and I watched her do that sexy as hell little shimmy to pull them up.

“Come on, Jodeci.”

“Go ahead, baby. I’ll be down there in a minute. I need to find a shirt.” I watched her leave the room before I got out of bed, phone in hand.

“You two are seriously adorable. How long before you give me nieces and nephews?” Molly cooed into the phone.

“If I had my way, she’d be pregnant right fucking now.” The thought tugged at something inside of me. “Actually, Blake is the reason I’m waiting to close on the house. I want her name on it too.” Molly’s eyes went wide and a smile followed.

“Oh my goodness. You’re serious about her, aren’t you?”

“I’ve known her most of my life. I’ve been serious about her for as long as I can remember. I just need to see if she’s onboard because a new house is huge and she’ll need time to think about it and see the house for herself. I don’t want to pressure her into anything. If I need to buy the house without putting her name on it, then I will but I want to give her the opportunity if she thinks we’re ready for it.”

Molly’s smile grew a little while she took notes and nodded. “I’m going to see if I can get her on board with waiting until you talk to Blake. I’ll text you when I hear back from her.” We ended our call and I got dressed for breakfast. I couldn’t wait to tell my mother and father the good news.

Jill Scott was playing when I walked into the kitchen and to my surprise, Janet was there laughing and talking with Blake. I tossed my arm around both of them and smiled.

“See, this is how I like to wake up,” I said. I liked waking up with my dick in Blake’s mouth even more but nobody needed to know that.

“We’ll eat and then your grandmother is coming over to see you, Devanté, so make sure you clean up this house.”

“But, Ma…” My lips fell into a frown. “I didn’t even mess the house up.”

“So? Clean it,” Janet teased, pulling away from me to get a plate.

“I would stay and help but I have party planning to do,” Blake shrugged.

“Janet, you’re not getting out of it either. Y’all can eat my food then you can help clean my house. Vacuum the floors and make sure those baseboards are clean. You know how my mother is,” she sighed.

“Okay, okay…” I huffed. “I’ll clean up.” I grabbed a plate of eggs, bacon, and pancakes and sat it down on the counter. “I have news though,” I beamed.

“Is Blake pregnant already?” Janet asked, glancing at Blake.

“Wow, Jay. Seriously?” Blake frowned playfully.

“I had to ask.”

“Is she?” Dad quizzed.

“No!” Blake and I said in unison.

“Renee took her baby to get the DNA test and like we all knew, he’s not mine.”

“Well hallelujah for that,” Dad chuckled. “I never doubted you, son but it was taking forever to get her to the lab.”

“I know,” I groaned. “I’m just glad to close that chapter and forget she existed.”

“You do know she’s going to reach out to you, right?” Blake said, with a forkful of eggs halfway to her mouth.

“I was going to say that too,” Janet chimed in, sitting beside Dad at the table.

“That’s cool. She can reach out all she wants. I have no obligation to her or the baby. I’m done.” I meant that shit from the bottom of my soul too. Normally, my philosophy was to operate with kindness at the forefront of everything but Renee had put me through hell and I couldn’t reward that with kindness.

After breakfast, Blake went to her parents’ house and I helped Janet clean the house while Mom insisted on playing Anita Baker at full volume. It was my childhood all over again. No matter how high my career climbed or how many people recognized me in the streets, at home I was going to clean the baseboards and vacuum before Grandma came to visit.
