“You do, of course, but I’m so used to seeing you with the curls.”

“I know. It was a wig. This is my real hair.”

“You’ve been trapping your beautiful hair under that dusty ass wig?”

“Um, seriously, Marshall?” I squeaked, flipping him off.

“What? I’m just saying you should have worn your natural hair from the jump.”

“Lucky for me, I’m not concerned with your opinion. Now, if you’d see yourself out of my office since I never invited you in…that would be great.” I gave him a bitchy smile and he glared at me.

“I just wanted to know what Bill was doing in here. More help with his divorce?” He quizzed.

“No. He wants to fire you. He didn’t know how to break it to you but that’s what I’m here for.” Marshall’s brown eyes widened in fear and I drank it all in. It was almost as tasty as tequila. Cadence laughed at his expression too.

“He wants to fire me?” He asked quietly.

“No. Now get out.” I pointed to the door but he looked like he didn’t know if he wanted to believe me or not. “Goodbye, Marshall.”

“I’m going to have a chat with Bill. I’ll talk to you ladies later.” He scurried out of my office and Cadence closed the door behind him.

“You’re keeping your job, right?” She asked me.

“Yes. I may even go for partner.” I tapped my finger on the desk and watched as Cadence’s brown pools grow wide.

“Partner? Wow! That’s amazing, Kyle! You deserve it. You’re the best fucking lawyer in this entire firm. If anyone deserves partner, it’s you.”

“Thank you, Cadence.” I grinned and felt genuine pride blossom in my chest.

“You’re a shoo-in.”

“I sure hope so.” I pushed my fingers through my hair and realized how good it felt to be able to do that. “Ugh,” I groaned at the realization.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m going to have to tell Max he was right all along about my hair,” I pouted. “I know I’m going to hear his mouth later on.”

“You should. That’s what you get. You should have known after meeting Bill and Charles that neither one of them would have cared how your hair looked. It’s your hair.” She waved her hand in the air and rolled her eyes at me.

“I’ve been scarred in the past,” I explained.

“Well that’s over with and now you can be yourself.”

“True. Now let me be myself and get some work done before my hair isn’t what gets me fired but my incessant talking is.” Cadence left me to my work and I decided not to rush out of the office early. Since my boss was cool with my natural hair, I had no reason to hide.

When the day was over, I went to the grocery store to pick up some puppy ice cream for Barks and some stuff to make dinner for Max. I knew he was probably still thinking about seeing his brother last night and I wanted to do something to take his mind off of it. Whenever my thoughts drifted off to Max and Nate, I shook my head.

How could his brother betray him like that? Did family not mean anything to him? Shit, if I were Max, I’d probably stay the hell away from relationships too. He was willing to take a risk with me though. I didn’t know how to feel about that.

Part of me was extremely flattered and another part of me was terrified. What if I fucked this up with him? What if he fucked it up with me? What if he was just as horrible as my ex, who shall never be named? The thought made my heart race.

I needed to pull back from Max a little bit. I was getting too deep too quick. I paused in the middle of the aisle I was strolling down and started rethinking dinner.

I knew he was going through some things though. I knew he needed someone who understood even when he didn’t want to talk about it. Even before Max and I started dating, I was the person he spent most of his time with.

Fuck it.
