Barkley hopped on the bed with me and I sighed, rubbing his furry black head. “Why can’t all men be as loyal as you, Barks?” He licked my hand as to tell me he’d always be there for me and I laughed a little. How fucking sad was I? My most loyal relationship was with my dog.

To be fair, he was a good dog.

“Kyla Bradshaw, you are the woman to be right now,” Cadence Barney said, pushing open the door to my office. She was an attorney at Allen & Allen Law as well. She wasn’t as good as me but who was?

“Yes. I am. What the hell are you talking about though?” I quizzed, pulling my glasses off my face and folding them up. I only needed them when I planned to stare at a screen for hours at a time and usually being at work meant staring at something for hours.

“I heard you won the case for Senator Brown. You closed her divorce and found a loophole in what everyone else thought was an airtight prenup.” She swayed into my office and sat across from me.

“And now I have a very happy client,” I smiled.

“And a very happy bank account,” Cadence added.

“Well yeah, there’s always that.”

“I swear, I looked over that prenup a thousand times and didn’t find a damn thing. Leave it up to you though.”

“Kyla Bradshaw, attorney at law,” I winked then slid my glasses back on. Cadence sat there for a while and sighed, staring longingly out of the window.

Clearly, she was there for something else. So I took my glasses back off and folded my hands on top of my desk. “What’s up, Cadence? You look like you need to talk.”

“I need your help.” She pouted and pulled the impossibly heavy armchair closer to my desk. I watched in awe. “Why are you looking at me like that?” She quizzed.

“You’re strong as fuck, girl. You pulled that chair up like it was a fold-up chair or something.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. Listen, I can’t seem to find anyone worth dating these days and I know you always stay with a date. Every night you go out with someone new and I can’t secure one guy. How do you do it, Kyla?”

“First of all, I understand all that superhuman strength you have now that I know you haven’t gotten any dick lately. Second of all, are you using any dating apps?” I rested my elbow on the desk and leaned forward a little.

Cadence looked at me as if I tried to summon a demon. “Dating apps?” She gasped. “That’s how you always have a date? I would have never thought you of all people would do online dating.”

“I don’tdoonline dating. I find suitable men online and talk to them until I decide if they’re worth dating or not. If they are, I proceed with a date.”

“I’m terrified of that stuff.” She waved her hand in the air and I stared, unbothered.

“How the hell do you date then? In this society, things move entirely too fast and everyone is so busy. If you don’t pick from a menu of available men then how do you find anyone?”

“I just go places I guess.” She shrugged her shoulders and nibbled on her bottom lip.

With a huge sigh, I said, “How’s that working for you, Cadence?” That earned me an eye roll.

“So if I come over tonight can you show me the ins and outs of app dating?” She used air quotes like it was some sort of imaginary way to find a man.

“Sure, I don’t have a date tonight. Why not? Bring snacks,” I told her with a point. I hated being without snacks and if Cadence was going to come to my house and whine about having to use dating apps, I was going to make her compensate me with food.

Food was my love language.

“Bring snacks?” Marshall Cooper passed my open office door and did a double take before backing up and walking inside.

Was my office the gathering spot or something? Maybe I missed the memo.

“You ladies hanging out after work?” Marshall eyed the weird placement of the empty armchair in my office versus the one Cadence strong-armed up to my desk. I laughed a little at his realization. “Did you drag that heavy ass chair to Kyle’s desk?” He asked.

“Why is that such a big deal?” She furrowed her dark brows and folded her arms.

“Because you have the strength of ten men,” Marshall joked. “Anyway, I heard talk of snacks.”
