“This doesn’t have shit to do with Sadie. You’re so far off,” I laughed, pulling the shirt over my head.

“Then it’s someone else?”

“Owen, leave it alone. Okay?” I walked out of the bathroom and my brother stared me down like I stole something from him. He stared me down like I was invadinghisapartment and not the other way around. “Don’t you have a car to fix or something?” I quizzed.

“I’m almost done with Kyle’s vacuum. I need to bring it by. Other than that, I’ve got nothing but time for you to tell me what the fuck is bothering you. I can see it all over your face, Max.” He followed me when I walked past him and went to finish off the rest of the sandwich he made.

“You will be gone by the time Sadie gets here,” I warned.

“Or elsewhat?”

“I’ll tell Mom.”

“Seriously, Max?” Owen’s gaze shifted around the room like our mother would pop out from behind the TV or something. I didn’t blame him though. That woman was crazy. That’s exactly why he stopped questioning me too. He didn’t even want the treat of Mom knowing he wouldn’t leave me the fuck alone.

“Seriously. Now, get the hell out so I can get ready for Sadie.”

“You’re tired of fucking these girls. I can tell. You’re ready to settle down.” His words annoyed the shit out of me. I hated when he acted like he was the older brother and knew every damn thing. If he knew so much why didn’t he know how to utilize his own fucking apartment and stop freeloading?

“Uh huh. Settle down. Whatever. Goodbye, Owen.” I walked over to the door and held it open for him. He chuckled, shaking his head before stepping into the hallway. From where I was standing, I could hear the doors on the elevator slide open. The sound made my chest tighten.

All of a sudden, I wasn’t looking at my brother anymore. I was looking at Kyle as she walked to her apartment. She was wearing a badass blue skirt suit that hugged her full hips and slender waist. Her clothes had to be tailored. They fit her body impeccably.

My eyes traced her shapely legs right up to her thick ass. My gaze climbed higher until I was staring at her tits and the way her shirt was unbuttoned enough to give the slightest peek at her mocha cleavage. My dick wanted to say hello before my mouth opened.

How the hell could I talk to her after that kiss we shared last night? We agreed to be friends and I already wanted to dry hump her in the fucking hallway like a teenager. She paused to look at me. Her eyes lingered over every part of my body the same way mine had done with her.

Owen looked between Kyle and me for a few seconds then scratched the back of his big ass head. “Um…something going on with yall?” He asked.

“What? No,” Kyle laughed and looked at me once more. She fumbled with her keychain until she found the right key. She held it between her pointer finger and thumb and tore her hazel stare away from me. I did the same.

“Nah. Kyle’s still as annoying as dirt under my nails.”

“And Max still looks like the dirt under mine,” Kyle said on cue. We shared one last look and then she disappeared into her apartment, shutting the door. Owen looked at me and shook his head yet again.

“You keep shaking your head at me like that and the little bit of brains you have are going to tumble out of your ear and down your shoulder, Owen.”

“Yeah okay. I’ll text you later to see if you actually fucked Sadie or if you were bullshitting.”

“Oh, you already know. I’m never with the bullshit.” Owen and I slapped hands and then he walked to the elevator. A part of me wanted to head across the hall to Kyle’s but I didn’t. I kept my distance because knowing her she wanted it that way.

Maybe I wanted it that way too.

I retreated into my apartment and started straightening up to make sure it looked nice when Sadie walked in. Honestly, I only cared about how my bedroom looked because that’s the only place I wanted her. The rest of my apartment wasn’t messy though. I never let my space get out of control. I liked things in their place. I liked for things to flow. My mind wouldn’t work properly if things were thrown around like a tornado blew through.

Thinking about tornadoes landed my mind right back on Kyle. I let out a frustrated growl while I made the bed. If she thought she was just going to storm her bossy ass way into my mind and hold it hostage she was wrong as fuck. Kissing her—or her kissing me—was a mistake and I knew that’s what she was telling herself. I was going to forget all about it when Sadie came over. I started to send Sadie a text and tell her to bring her ass over immediately.

I didn’t want to seem thirsty though. So instead of texting her, I grabbed myself a bottle of wine and tried not to focus on the fact that Kyle would have undoubtedly called me bougie and grabbed a champagne flute full to the rim with tequila and pineapple juice.

I’m the bougie one though.

A laugh escaped me and I realized I was thinking about her again.

Fuck.

Even in my thoughts, she didn’t know how to listen.

Thank god I was jarred out of my torturous mind when my phone beeped. It was a text from Sadie telling me she was on the way up to my floor. Relief flooded my senses and I opened the door to greet her. I didn’t want the troll across the hall intercepting but I fully expected her to.
