I went to the kitchen and grabbed us both a beer. I knew he wanted one even though he didn’t ask.
“She’s okay, Max. I thought you said you weren’t serious about her?” I stood in front of him and shook his can of beer vigorously before handing it to him then I sat down on the couch with a smug smile.
“I’m not. I guess I wanted your honest opinion. God knows why I had a momentary lack of judgment.” The minute my ass hit the space beside him, he set his can of shaken beer on the coffee table and lunged, pressing his solid weight against me. My entire body lit up like a fucking Christmas tree.
Damn, had it been that long sing I got laid?
I squealed and extended my arm as far as it would go. Max tickled my ribs until I drew my arms against my sides then he plucked the cold can of beer right from my fingers. Asshole. Once he had what he wanted, he retreated back to his side of the couch and I sat up trying to catch my breath. He was a real piece of work. I absolutely hated it when he one-upped me.
“Now, you can wait for that one to settle down,” he remarked, cracking open the can I saved for myself.
“I can’t stand you.”
“You adore me. Face it.” He tossed a piece of popcorn in his mouth and put onLiving Singleinstead of a movie. I guess we’d watched all the good ones. I didn’t mind binge-watching episodes of one of my favorite shows though.
Honestly, most nineties sitcoms were my absolute favorite. They sparked nostalgia unlike anything else. Before I knew it, I wasn’t being asked any more unnerving questions about Sadie and I was able to hang out with Max. I couldn’t tell if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
After about three episodes of us laughing and passing memories of childhood back and forth, Max’s phone rang. I glanced at the screen and saw Sadie’s name and face pop up. I turned the corners of my lips down and sat up a little straighter.
“You put her picture in your phone? But you want me to believe you don’t like this girl. Yeah, okay, Max.”
“So, do I have to feed you kibble to stop the yapping or will it go away on its own?” He glared at me before accepting the call and I cackled.
“What’s up, beautiful?” He crooned into the phone. I pretended to gag silently and he turned to ignore me. “Thinking about me, huh?” Sadie was clearly in need of a mental evaluation. Who the hell sat around on a perfectly good night thinking about Maxwell Parker? Ugh.
“I’m free tomorrow. I can swing by and hang out. Right now? I’m pet sitting,” he glanced at me and I tossed a handful of popcorn at his head. “No, I’m hanging out with my neighbor, Kyle. We have a sadistic ritual we can’t seem to break.” He was right about that. My entire relationship with him was sadism at its finest.
I stretched my hands above my head and felt eyes almost like laser beams tracing every inch of me. Was I losing my mind? I looked over at Max and he was focused on pausing the TV so he could hear better on the phone.
Yup.
I was losing my mind.
“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He ended the call and looked at me with the most arrogant smile. “So you know this means that after tomorrow, I’ll officially have me a new fuck buddy?”
“Gross, Max. The fact that anyone lets you near their pussy is just awful.” I crossed my legs and pressed my thighs together. Max tossed his head back to laugh and I stole a moment to look at his chiseled jaw and chin. His deep brown skin was smooth as melted chocolate and his full lips curved upward baring the most perfect white teeth. It was absolutely obnoxious.
Who had perfect teeth like that?
Who had a sparkling smile and rich laugh like that?
He was such a damn nuisance.
“Well, after tomorrow, Sadie won’t think it’s awful. Matter fact she’ll be screaming for God and thanking him for blessing me the way he did.” He tucked his full bottom lip between his perfect white teeth and I stood upright, ready to walk out. I didn’t have to put up with that kind of talk.
It made my ears burn.
“Kyle, where are you going?” He quizzed.
“I’m leaving so you can do whatever it is that you do to prepare for your romp with Grady.”
“That’s not until tomorrow and her name is Sadie.”
“That’s a ridiculous name, by the way.”
“I didn’t name her. Take it up with her parents. Besides, I couldn’t care less how ridiculous her name is as long as by tomorrow night she’s screaming mine.”
“You’re so damn corny,” I blurted. Max ignored my jab and patted the space beside him on the couch.
