“Yeah. I think so,” she said. When she raised her arms to pull her long hair up into a bun for the night, I watched her, transfixed. Her beauty was out of this fucking world. Even wearing nothing but a t-shirt with her hair pulled off her face I’d never seen anything more beautiful. We stayed in Hawaii for a week and nothing I saw there rivaled Sutton’s beauty.

“I can’t believe all the times I thought I was getting lost in the music until you came home in the evening was me losing time. It’s a wonder I was able to execute my music at all. Who knows how many hours I’ve actually been practicing.” She seemed upset by that discovery.

I walked over to her and slid my arms around her waist. I waited for her to tense or to give me the polite hands-off smile, but she never did. She didn’t settle into me like Margot would have but she didn’t flee either.

“That speaks to how fucking amazing you are, Sutton. Your skills are crazy.”

“Does Margot play the piano?” She asked me curiously.

“She never mentioned it.”

“God, I wish I could talk to her. It’s like having a roommate in your head but never seeing them around. She’s like a phantom. It’s so strange having to grapple with this. I know I shouldn’t but…I feel insane, Lennox.”

I wanted to ease her mind but I knew I couldn’t do that. She would have to figure out how to cope with this in her own way. If I interfered all the time she’d become dependent.

“You’re not. Let’s get some rest and we’ll talk in the morning.” I kissed her forehead and she smiled up at me.

“Thank you for being…you, Lennox.” We climbed in bed and to my surprise, Sutton snuggled up beside me. “I want to feel close to you. You’re my anchor. I’m literally floating in the world with no way to steer myself but you tether me to what’s real.”

“That’s what I’m here for, Sutton. I told you I’ll never leave you. There’s no one else out there for me.” I lay perfectly still in bed beside her because I didn’t want to disturb our moment. If I moved, she might freeze up again and I wanted to keep her near me as Sutton, at least for one night.
