CHAPTER TEN

LENNOX

The island of Honolulu was just as beautiful as I’d heard. It was well worth the trip. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with cold drinks, leis, and a beautiful hula dance before we were escorted to our villa.

As much as Sutton wanted to fight the sheer beauty of Hawaii with her sour attitude, even she was mesmerized by the bright colors and unrelenting cheery sunshine. I’d traveled to islands before but this was my first trip to Hawaii. I could guarantee it wouldn’t be my last.

“I think I’m going to take a nap when I get to the villa,” Sutton sighed while we rode in the back of an air-conditioned SUV.

“Nap? Are you serious? We slept off and on for most of the flight. Don’t you want to explore?” I asked, looking at the palm trees as they zoomed by.

“Later,” Sutton yawned. There was no way she was that damn tired. She was protesting in her silent, passive way.

When we arrived at the villa, our driver took our bags in and showed us around. The villa was spacious with a pool in the back surrounded by flower bushes that permeated the air with their fragrance. There was only one other villa on the same strip of land as ours so I knew for a fact that we’d have plenty of privacy.

Once we were alone, Sutton made her way to the bedroom and kicked off her shoes. I watched her pull the blankets back and slide into bed without so much as a glance in my direction. I don’t know why, but I was truly floored.

“You’re really going to bed right now, Sutton?”

“I told you I’m taking a nap.”

I tried not to let anger get the best of me. Maybe she was jet-lagged even though I had tons of energy and couldn’t wait to find things to do. So I let her take a nap while I mapped out a loose itinerary for us.

I took a shower and changed into a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. By the time I was done getting dressed, Sutton was awake. Finally.

“What’s up, beautiful? I was starting to think you’d sleep all day.” I looked outside and noticed the sun going down. It cast a stunning glow over the Honolulu sky. I wanted nothing more than to go to the beach with Sutton and experience it.

“Lennox, if you want, you can go have fun without me. Maybe I’ll feel up to it tomorrow. While you’re gone, I’ll make my list like Dr. Adler asked.”

The smile dropped from my face like a brick. “Are you serious right now, Sutton? The sun is setting and all I can think about is taking a walk with you on the beach but you’re going to sit here in the villa instead?”

“Just for tonight. I promise I’ll hang out tomorrow. I’m just really tired. I don’t want to stop you from having fun though.” She pulled her knees up to her chest and looked at me for a while. I couldn’t read her face but honestly, I was too pissed to try.

Maybe she was right.

Maybe I needed to go have fun without her.
