I notice Sean doesn’t react. He’s probably flown with Evan before.

“Please take a seat in the main cabin for takeoff and landing, but otherwise, the entire plane will be at your disposal,” she says.

“How soon will we be taking off?” Sean asks.

“Within the next fifteen minutes or so. The pilots are doing their final safety checks now. Would you like a drink?”

“A French martini for me and Macallan for Sean.”

“I’ll bring them to your seats.”

We settle into the plush leather seats. While we wait for our drinks, Sean is busily texting someone.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Letting everyone know I’m going to be away.”

“When you finish, we should toast Cassie and Evan. They were the first to figure out how to make a relationship work. We beat them to the finish line though.” I laugh.

We accept our drinks from Kimberly and clink glasses.

“Also, cheers to my dad and his bizarre trust agreement. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have spent enough time together to figure us out.” He smiles, leaning over and kissing me.

I’ll never tire of his lips on mine.

The flight attendant appears again. “Excuse me, we’re ready for takeoff. I’ll take your glasses so you can buckle up.”

Our seatbelts snapped in place, I pinch myself as the plane shoots down the runway and lifts into the air. It’s hard to believe this is my new life.

When the seatbelt sign is extinguished, Kimberly offers us a snack. Instead, we opt to retreat to the bedroom for a nap. At least that’s what we told her.

Once the door clicks closed, Sean steps within inches of me and gently pushes my hair behind my ears. One hand on each side of my face, he bends down and softly kisses me. Pulling back, he stares into my eyes, saying, “This will be the first time I’ve ever made love to anyone.”

“What do you mean? We’ve had sex more times than I can count.”

“Sure, we’ve had sex. But I’ve nevermade loveto anyone before you. Be patient. This will take a while. I’m going to find every single place on your body that makes you moan. I’m just trying to decide where to start.”

It’s getting hot in here.

“I’ve always heard that sex becomes boring after marriage,” I tease.

“Sweetheart, the two of us will never be boring. Let’s see. Where are those cupcakes? I have an idea.”

Whew! We’ve had fantastic sex before but nothing like this. Tonight we’re combining all the passion and chemistry with love and attentiveness to detail that I’ve never experienced before.

Propped on an elbow, I trace my finger over Sean’s chest as I ask, “When did you start planning to make our marriage a real one?”

“That’s a hard question to answer. I’m not sure I can pinpoint a specific moment. Each day we were together, the idea of you leaving bothered me more. I started questioning whether letting you go would be worse than sharing my life with you for as long as possible. I watched Dad suffer when he lost my mom, but they had decades of happiness together. I watched people around me hurting from having missed a chance to be with someone they cared about. Emily and Paxton each let a love go or messed up a relationship in the past and years later are still in pain from the loss. When I found you beaten and tied up in the tree, the reality that I might have lost you was the final straw. I vowed to do whatever it took to convince you that we were meant to be together.”

“What would you have done if I’d turned down your proposal today?”

“I figured I’d still have a couple of months to change your mind.”

“That’s funny. I was dreading the end of our time together but didn’t know what to do about it. I’m glad you figured out the solution.”

“Me too.”

“By the way, when will we get to your apartment in Paris?”
