No, of course she didn’t have an attachment—to the man or his land.
“You don’t need to worry about my sisters. I will make sure they sign. But let me know as soon as you’ve contacted the others,” Dahlia said.
And then Emma was listening to three quick beeps, followed by silence. Sister Number Four had just hung up on her.
She lowered her phone to stare at it. “So rude.”
“I hope you’re not talking about me.” Nash’s low voice from her doorway made her jump, and then she giggled at his smug little grin.
“Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to startle you. Just wanted to see how you were getting on.”
“Well, one call is done, and I think I hit three birds with one stone.” She wrinkled her nose. “So to speak.”
She pursed her lips, not sure if she was right about that.
Dahlia obviously liked being in control and handling things with quick efficiency. She indicated that her sisters would sign, but what if they didn’t want to? She really should call them and check for herself. She felt it was her responsibility to make sure the decision was, in fact, unanimous.
The idea made her stomach twist into a tight knot. Would they all be as unpleasant as Dahlia?
Nash’s low, warm chuckle distracted her, making her forget all about snide sisters and the fact that she had more calls to make.
“You almost ready for your tour?” He shoved his hands into his pockets. “I don’t want to hurry you. There’s no rush.”
“Oh no, I am ready. I am so, so ready.”
He laughed at her eagerness, but the moment her feet hit the floor she was stopped by one thought, a comment from Dahlia that had been nagging at her for the last few minutes. There was no way she could enjoy her tour until she cleared something up.
She held up a finger. “Can I just make one more quick call?”
“Of course.” That slight little hitch of his lips just before he walked off made her knees go weak.
She put a hand out and braced herself against the bed. Goodness. It was probably for the best if Dahlia was right and she wrapped this up quickly.
Nash was too appealing for his own good. She had no doubt that he was only being nice to her out of some sense of duty. Or maybe even pity.
The thought made her cringe.
Please, don’t let it be pity.
But even knowing that, it was getting harder and harder to remember that his smiles weren’t meant for her. Not like that.
She gave her head a shake to clear it of thoughts of Nash as she picked up the phone to call her mom.
Her mom didn’t answer. She was probably out with Lizzy running wedding errands.
She frowned down at her phone. She couldn’t enjoy her tour of the ranch until she addressed that comment.
Of course I knew. My mother kept no secrets from me.
Which of course begged the question, had Emma’s mom kept secrets from her? Or had she been just as in the dark as Emma and Lizzy?
She tried their home number but it was her stepfather Derek who answered.
“Sorry, hon, your mom is out with Lizzy. Who knows when those two will be back,” he said with a good-natured laugh.
“Oh.” She sighed. “Okay.”
“Is there something I can help you with?”
