She simply nodded, scared stupid. Losing Charlie terrified her. Now, she’d worry every time he tried to help her on a case.

“Tell me he’s not dying,” she begged.

Chris knew he couldn’t answer that, but she needed him to lie for her own well-being.

“He’ll be fine. He’s at the hospital, and Sam’s with him. You know how Sam is. He’ll hover,” he said, hoping that was the case.

He was worried though.

Sam wasn’t from this area, so even as a doctor, he’d not have the ability to get the truth from the doctors on staff there.

But he would.

Work was done for the day.

Family business was about to take over. His wife needed him to be there for them.

“Let’s go,” he said, taking his phone, his wallet, and the keys.

Together, they headed into the heated garage, and he backed her Jeep out of the dwelling and into the street. There was snow falling, and he knew the trip to the hospital was going to take some time.

From beside him, he could feel her panic and fear.

“It’s going to be okay, Bethe. Charlie is tough and strong. He’ll be good.”

Would he be?

She wasn’t so sure.

Honestly, thinking back to it, Charlie had seemed off the last week, and she’d ignored it, letting him work on the case with her.

Now, she was regretting it.

“If anything happens to him, I’m not going to be okay,” she said, sitting in the passenger seat.

Oh, he was aware.

Now, all Chris could hope was that his woman would be okay, and that Charlie would be too.

He didn’t want his family falling apart. He couldn’t remember losing his father since he was a baby, but losing Charlie…

That would hurt.

Chapter Six

The Police Precinct

Captain Oliver Guy’s Office

Saturday

Noon

Luckily for them, when they showed up at the police precinct, the homicide captain was in-house. Police hours were erratic, but Gene knew that most of the time, cops worked weekends.

Hell.

He and Ethan were Feds, a different kind of cop, but they also had the worst hours known to man.
