“If this is making you too nervous, you don’t have to be here,” Marley said.

“Nervous?” My brows furrowed. “No. I’m fine. You’re the one who should be nervous.”

“Why me?”

“Because you’re pregnant with twins. I can only imagine how hard that will be delivering two babies.” I smirked.

“No. No. No.” She shook her head. “I’m having a C-section. There is no way these little ruga roos are coming out of my vagina.”

“Marley?” The nurse called her name.

We stood up and followed her back to a room. After she took Marley’s blood pressure, she told her the doctor would be in soon. I sat in the chair and stared at the pictures on the wall. I never thought I’d be sitting in an OB/GYN office with a woman in a million years. But here I was.

“How is Mama doing today?” The doctor smiled, walking into the room. “Oh, hello. Dr. Gregario.” He extended his hand.

“Charlie.” I lightly shook it.

“Father?”

“Yes.”

“Very good.” He smiled. “So, Marley. How are you feeling?”

“Still nauseous all day, not vomiting as much, but still tired.”

“Well, that’s to be expected. Lie down on the table and lift up your shirt,” he said. “Ah, look at that. The baby bump has appeared.”

“Isn’t it kind of early?” Marley asked him.

“Not with twins. We’re going to draw your blood and run some genetic tests to make sure there aren’t any abnormalities.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“We’re testing for genetic disorders. It’s just a precaution. We’ll also be able to find out the twins' genders if you’re interested. After you get your blood drawn, Marley, the nurse will take you down to the ultrasound room, and we’ll see what your babies are up to.” He smiled.

Chapter Twenty-One

Charlie

The door opened to the ultrasound room, and Dr. Gregario walked in.

“Okay, let’s see how the babies are cooking in there.” He grinned.

I furrowed my brows at Marley because I felt this guy was a little off. I stared at the monitor as the doctor moved the wand across Marley’s belly. My heart started to race.

“Ah, look at those little beauties. Here’s Baby A and Baby B. Do you want to know if they’re identical or fraternal?” Dr. Gregario asked.

“Yes,” Marley replied. “I need to know in advance if my stress levels are going to rise because I won’t be able to tell my babies apart.”

I swallowed hard as I reached over and took hold of her hand.

“Your stress levels are going to be just fine, Marley. Your babies are fraternal twins.”

“Oh, thank God.” She sighed in relief, and I gently squeezed her hand.

“The babies look great and are growing on schedule.” Dr. Gregario grinned. “Keep up the good work, Marley. If you should experience any issues before your next appointment, be sure to call me. It’s better to be safe than sorry. If you haven’t already, I suggest you go and get some books on twin pregnancies. Knowledge is your superpower.”

“Thanks, Dr. Gregario.” Marley smiled.
