“I hate to break the news to you, my friend, but it is real. You have the rings and the marriage license to prove it. I will keepcalling her your wife as long as you have those.” He stood up. “I have to get to the office. I just wanted to stop by and tell you the big news.”

I walked over and hugged him. “Congratulations, Levi.”

“Thanks, Miles.”

He walked out of my office and shut the door. I walked over to the window, tucked my hands into my pants pockets, and stared out at the busy city. I thought about Stella. Picking up my phone, I sent her a text.

“How are classes going?”

I waited for a response, and after a few moments, I placed my phone in my pocket and headed to a meeting. Once my meeting was over, I pulled out my phone, and still no text from her. What the fuck? I called Sean.

“Hey, Miles.”

“Did you pick up Stella at NYU yet?”

“Yes, and I drove her straight home.”

“How long ago?”

“About an hour.”

“Was she okay?”

“Yeah. She was fine. Why?”

“Just wondering. I’m leaving the office around five o’clock.”

“Okay. I’ll be there.”

Chapter Sixteen

Stella

I’d made it through the day, but damn was I tired. Stepping off the elevator, I kicked off my shoes, set my bag down, and walked into the kitchen.

“How was your day?” Dora smiled, wiping down the island.

“It was good. I’m going to enjoy these last two classes.”

“You look tired, Stella. Can I make you some tea?”

“That would be great, Dora. Do we have any peppermint tea?”

“Yes.” She smiled.

She made me some tea and set it down before me at the island. Holding the warm cup between my hands, I took a soothing sip.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Just feeling a little under the weather today.”

“I made dinner for you and Miles. It’s in the warming oven.” She grabbed her purse.

“Thanks. I’ll make sure his stays in there because God knows what time he’ll be home.”

“I just want you to know that I don’t agree with this little arrangement the two of you have. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“It’s too late for that.” I sipped my tea.
