Knowing her husband wasn't overly fond of the estate, she wondered even if given that, at some point in time, the place couldn't be updated.
As Anna made her way back down to the main level and to the drawing room, she thought for now, they were simply here to see to her husband’s business interests, both on and off the estate.
Chapter Twenty-Five
"Ifinally receivedword back from the Duke of Marlborough regarding Lady Caroline," Henry said.
They were enjoying dinner in the breakfast room, rather than the enormous dining room, which would have devoured just the two of them.
"What did His Grace have to say?"
Anna picked up a small forkful of roasted chicken and held it, awaiting his answer.
"Their Graces are on the continent at their townhouse in Paris. They had no idea of what Lady Caroline was up to and never approved a marriage between herself and the earl."
"Oh, my," Anna replied. "Did she defy her father, or is something else going on here?"
Henry shook his head. "It appears to be a bit of both. In any case, he was shocked and made mention that they would be returning as soon as he could arrange it."
"This all becomes more and more curious, doesn't it?"
He smiled and picked up his wine glass. "Indeed."
"Do you think he compromised her and forced her into marriage?"
"Honestly? I haven't a clue, though I'm inclined to believe that's what happened. She married him to preserve her reputation."
"Surely she must be aware the man's almost broke."
Henry nodded. "I can't imagine her not knowing."
Anna placed her fork in the center of her plate and sat back. "But you still have to wonder what they're doing here in the village," Anna said. "Your men haven't learned anything?"
"Whatever the reason, Carlisle is keeping it to himself."
"Let's hope her father can straighten it all out," Anna replied quietly.
